I set the power management GPOs to never shut the computer down, sleep, or put into hibernate. It only dims the display after 10 minutes. I made those changes today so we'll see what happens tomorrow. A couple of them didn't have the new power mgmt gpos yet when I went down there today. I forced them all so we'll see.

Yes, the keys are disabled on the Dell 2110. The u160 has a physical switch, no Fn keys for wifi. The switch does work, but I have tested and tested and the card doesn't ever go to disabled when I operate that switch. It will X out the adapter, then when I turn the switch back to on it will reconnect on it's own. On the U160 there is absolutely nothing in the bios having to do with wifi. thanks

Hello All, Backstory: I have a cart with 30 netbooks in one of my middle schools. These netbooks ran Vista x86. We are now in the process of upgraded all of our win2k and vista up to Win 7 x86. I imaged half of these netbooks last week. There is about half Dell 2110s and the other half is MSI Wind U160s. Both models of netbooks keep disabling the wifi adapter. Under the student account they cannot go into the network sharing center to re-enable it. At first I thought it was a power management issue and the adapter was just not waking up. Since then I have reinstalled the latest drivers, unchecked turn off this device to save power, and set the power management GPO to never put the netbooks to sleep. None of those have helped. Once re-enabled the will work for the rest of the day. It's not all the time either, the one netbook worked for 3 days and all of a sudden today the wifi card was disabled again. Any ideas? I did end up getting this to work with local policies, I could never get and AD GPOs to apply to IE9 even after editing the XML max value. I just disabled the customer experience, first run config popup, and recommended add-on settings popup. Sucks it has to be set local, but gotta do what we gotta do!

Hello All, Currently I'm working on creating a new Windows 7 image for our new WDS server. Previously we used KACE to deploy but the lack of multicasting has us fishing for other options. IE9 has been giving me hell. We never used it before, we always hid IE and had Chrome and Firefox on our machines. Our new director is adamant we go to an IE based district. All fine and dandy, until we try to use it. At first run the users whether local, mandatory, or roaming IE9 takes FOREVER to display the homepage. We're talking 2-5 minutes, usually getting the recover webpage button at the bottom. If I look in addons after IE has fully started they all say they started in milliseconds so I don't think it's an Addon issue. I have tried starting with all addons disabled and that doesn't help either. But if you wait out the first run per session IE9 runs fine after that even after closing and opening again. But as soon as the user logs off and back on again they have to wait for the homepage. Usually the recommended settings dialog pops up after the homepage finally comes up as well. I'm thinking it has to do with that recommended settings dialog. Is there a way to set that for all users to use recommended settings on the machine itself and not have to rely on a GPO to do it? Any other ideas what could be hanging it up? Thanks!

Here's something I just noticed, when signed into the test image as a domain admin, I cannot access the linux servers through the samba shares. (start>run \\svr21001\ or \\10.21.1.10) I get unknown username or password. Ok, I think I'm onto something....found this while researching Samba and windows, sure enough it fixed my problem! Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > set Network security: LAN Manager authentication level: Set to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.

Ok, I VPNd in to try this. I setup a share on a windows 7 box. Dropped in the wash.man.V2 folder. Set the permissions. Pointed the user profile in AD to \\10.21.100.26\profiles\wash.man It logged in perfectly! So where does that leave me? Currently the mandatory profiles are hosted on Linux servers in each school running Samba version 3.0.23c. I copied the wash.man.V2 to the DC which is server 2k3 and the profile will not load once I redirect the profile path to there. Mind you, this is where all the Admin building profiles are stored and the same building as the data center, I just copied this profile from the win7 box to there. Every school has their own file sharing linux server to host home drives and profiles. I just can't put 2 and 2 together as to why these new images aren't working with the samba shares when the old windows 7 image is sitting right next to me working perfect. ugh! I hate inheriting other peoples stuff! Thanks!

I will check the Samba version tonight when I go back to work to plug away at this. I will try copying the profile folder to a win7 box and see what happens. If I remember I did copy the profile to the win2k3 DC server and it still wouldn't load. I'll try that though to be sure. thanks!

Ok, thanks for reading, this is going to get long so bear with me. Currently I work in the IT department for a school district of 11,000 kids, 19 buildings, 6,000 networked devices and 1000 teachers. I've been here 8 years and most of that time our network was Win2k with NT domain controllers, local policies. We were never given the funds to upgrade. All of a sudden we got a new superintendent and there was unlimited funds that they funnelled to Dell to "upgrade" our infrastructure. Firstly we deployed 1000 Dell laptops to teachers. Then Dell sent a company in to upgrade every switch in every building. And also built a large data center and moved us to AD. Anyways, the teacher laptops were the first Win7 machines. I was not responsible for the image on those and they have been working great. Now with AD and KACE installed we have a new Director of Tech and he wants the entire district imaged up to Win7 or XP SP3 with our Microsoft EES agreement. The two sysadmins prior in charge of creating images have since left leaving me in charge with a group of 8 IT personnel. We are stretched thin, but promises of hiring 2-3 more are in the works. These new images were put on my plate. I have made a 32 bit XP SP3 image, 32 bit Win7, and 64 bit Win7. The problem we are having is any mandatory student profile will not login on any of the images. We get user profile service failed the logon. These student profiles are located on linux samba shares in each building for now. There are plans to centralize but it's not happening this year. I will break it down XP SP3 - Students can't login with mandatory profiles. Teachers can login fine. Win7 32 bit and 64 bit - Students get the user profile service failed the logon and have never worked on these new images, all while every other teacher laptop, Vista, and Win2k image in the district prior to these does work. Teachers can log into these images but get temp profiles. If I create a new user and profile on the windows DC the profiles load fine. I copied the .man.V2 folder to the DC and changed teh profile path in AD to see if that would allow the login. I get the same User Profile service failed the logon. I've opened up all perms on the profile as well. I have scoured our old working windows 7 local group policies and applied them with no luck. Our new director's plans are to have no local group policies anymore and do it all with AD, security groups, and GPOs. The problem is I cannot go forward until I figure this out. Policies I have set on the OU the machine is in: computer config>admin templates>system>user profiles "Do not check for user ownership of Roaming Profile Folders" computer config>admin templates>system>user profiles "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" computer config>admin templates>system>user profiles "Do not detect slow network connections" computer config>admin templates>system>user profiles "Wait for remote user profile" I just feel like I'm going in circles trying to track this down and thought I'd see what you guys thought. At first I was thinking it's an AD Samba incompatibility issue, but the other images in the district are working fine. Thanks for reading and any insight!!

I'm at a point where alot of our schools use the AverMedia 11 TVBoxes. AVerMedia MPD USA - PCTV tuner card - HDTV tuners - HD Capture - Live TV on iPad - HD Media Player - AVerTV Hybrid TVBox 11 Alot of them over time just stop projecting through our baluns. Currently most rooms are a pc side balun and a projector side balun connected with Cat5e. After time the AverMedias just plain stop passing through computer signal when the box is off. Then the teacher has to turn the AverMedia on and switch to PC input. And eventually it just stops passing the computer screen. It will still pass TV and other inputs. We've tried many different cables and configs. If I bring the box to our testing area the box will work perfect hooked directly to a monitor with VGA. But will not work over baluns. My guess over time the power output degrades so much that the box won't boost the vga coming in. I'm not sure why TV and other inputs would display fine. What are you using in your environments? We have teachers that view Channel One, use Visualizers, DVD/VCR players, and computers to project through one VGA balun to the projector. I need something that will withstand the rigors of classroom use and have multiple inputs including a cable tuner. Thanks!

We no longer used any NT computers as of last school year, but for whatever reason the Network admins stuck with the NT domain authentication throughout the years. Don't ask me why, that's not my department. Forever we had a sup. that didn't want to stick money into technology. We got a new sup. two years ago and she's put an emphasis on 21st century learning and upgrading technology. So we are trying to play the catchup game from 10 years behind. edit: I'm not sure the reasoning behind moving to 2k3 over 2k8.
