We had a dell 1710 printer do something similar and it turned out to be the fact the printer driver allowed double sided duplex printing but the printer did not have the paper feed mechanism to do this , so it would print a big arrow asking you to put paper in this way to print second side. It Might be something similar if you have updated drivers.

It might be some of the ini files are hidden or system you might need to use attrib to unhide them or mark them as non system before deleting
