I've now got a couple of people in school happily uploading content to the website (Mereway Community College - Home) and as a result I've gradually put together a user guide for them. It occurred to me that some of you in a similar situation might find it useful. Obviously it has been written with our school setup in mind - e.g. we don't have a proprietary photo editing package so we use GIMP. And it might also contain ommisions and/or errors (it's still a work in progress), but if it is of any use and you want the original Word document (which you are free to edit in any way) then PM me. Hi it's fixed now - with help from Andy at Cutter, the mail settings have been changed to use SMTP and it now works. We're still not sure why the other method didn't work but hey! Have a good weekend everyone

Hi When we try to use the mail form in the Contact Us section of our edugeek joomla site at http://www.mcc.northants.sch.uk we get the following message "Please make sure the form is complete & valid". The same thing works fine on our test site at http://www.meretest.org.uk so I'm guessing there's probably something I need to do on our server (in house linux). The mail settings in Global Config are: Mailer: PHP mail function sendmail path: /usr/bin/sendmail SMTP auth: No SMTP Host: Localhost Again these are the same settings as our test site and I haven't changed anything. Any clues gratefully recieved.

OK Thanks Sysman

I'm now trying to set up a couple of users to publish news articles via the front-end. I've got a couple of queries: 1. When the user clicks on the button next to the Start Publishing date box, instead of a clickable calendar we get unstyled text but nothing that is clickable. Is there something I need to set up somewhere for it to appear like the pop-up calendar in the back-end? 2. If a user has saved an article but not published it (State = Unpublished), how do they then get back to edit it and set it as Published? The only options in the menu are: Submit School News Edit Urgent News Edit School Newsletter Edit Term Dates Edit Announcement One Edit Announcement Two Edit Announcement Three Is there any way that I could get "Edit School News" as an option that would enable the user to see a list of published and unpublished News Items, or is this only possible from the back-end? (The users have been given "Publisher" access). I'd be grateful for any pointers.

Mmm - EMBC Net Sweeper categorises that as online gambling!!!

Thanks guys, the map was done with an extension from joomlicious and a google map api. See this: http://joomlicious.com/Core/Replace-Contact-Component-Image-with-Google-Map-6.html

Our site went live today. Although by no means the finished product, I'm hoping its a sound enough start. I only get about an average of 1 or 2 hours per week to spend on it and some weeks I get no time at all, so the whole thing is a bit slow going. Constructive criticism welcome! Thanks to Sysman, and all other helpful contributors. http://www.mcc.northants.sch.uk

Sorry I can't help with a solution but I have exactly the same error message with the Google map API on our contact page. I'm pretty sure it worked to start with - it also works fine in Firefox but not in IE. I've also been unsuccessful in finding any answers on the Internet.

Thank you - I thought that would probably be the case. I'll have a few of these so it looks like I'll need to make a decision whether to: *have more than one copy of the same content *only have it available from one menu *let users work it out for themselves - if they find themselves whisked off to a different section they can always find their way back Does anybody have an opinion on which is the best way to do it?

Hi I'm gradually getting there with our site based on the Edugeek/Rokwebify template (thank you so much for that Sysman). Unlike many of you who say "great - only took me 3 days to throw the website together", I've really struggled to get to grips with Joomla. see test website here. The current problem that has me scratching my head is how to control which menu is visible depending on the route a visitor takes to arrive at the content. For example there is a content item for "Educational Support" which can be found in the Parents Info menu and also the Departments menu. If a visitor clicks on the link in the Parents menu the Parents menu remains in place. But if the visitor clicks on the link in the departments menu then the menu changes to the Parents menu, which I think could be a bit confusing. Hope all that makes sense. I think I've checked all the boxes to make the menus visible where I need them to be but it seems to be favouring one over the other. Do I need to create two separate but identical content items? (not ideal for maintainance purposes). Or is there another way round?

Ok I think I'm all sorted now First, the folder permissions are because of SUEXEC (thanks Anti) - 5 quid host confirmed this is being reset automatically and assured me that I don't nedd 777 permissions. Second, the Colour Switcher wasn't working because I appear to have FTP'd in non-binary mode and this stripped all of the line break and carriage return characters from the .js file - (the help desk at 5 quid host discovered this - respect!) Sysman - I did originally start to develop using WAMP but decided to swap to a web setup so that I could make sure it was all working in a real online environment. It also means that I can get other interested parties to check things as they go up. Thanks to everyone for your advice - a lifeline! I'm off to Exmoor for the weekend so next week is a fresh start!!

Scott - think I'm with you now about registered on or off - I turned the rg_emulation to off as the installation routine and Joomla website seems to recommend. Could this be why the switcher doesn't work? Anti - it's hosted with 5 quid host, this won't be the final host for the website (the domain is also temproray) but rather something I've set up off my own back so that I could develop it over the holiday. I'll contact them and ask them about SUEXEC and see if they can shed any light on the problems I'm having. Thanks guys it's really good to know you're out there

Hi Scot - PHP version is 4.4.6 and MySQL is 4.1.21 - standard. I'm not sure what you mean by registered on or off (sorry to be so dumb but I'm new to Joomla/PHP/mySQL). Hi Sysman - I haven't edited the index.php but I have edited the rg_emulation setting in globals.php. Should I be doing something to the index.php? The thing that's started to worry me is that the folders I made writeable (as per edugeek template instructions) are once again set to 755 (they were 777). As this as already happened a few times, I checked back yesterday after changing the settings the day before and all looked fine - but now its reverted again! What's going on??? I'm trying to set this website up during my holdays as there's never any time during term time. I chose Joomla thinking that it might be an easier option but I'm starting to think I'm out of my depth. Any pointers very much appreciated

I've copied the template folders to the server again and double checked the permissions. Still got the same problem though I think my next step is probably to disable the colour switcher and just hope that this problem is isolated rather than an indication of more trouble ahead with my installation. Thanks for your advice Scot

Thanks Scot I'm a bit reluctant to copy all files again as I've already started to make a few changes. Any ideas which files/folders in particular might need to be copied? I've checked the permissions and sure enough the documents folder and all the stories subfolders have reset themselves back to read-only (the second time this has happened). After I change permissions all appears as it should but the next time I look it has reverted - aaargh! The first couple of times I did it with ftp (filezilla) and just now I tried it via Cpanel. As I look now the folders appear to be writable again but the colour switcher still doesn't work. Thanks for your help Carol

I've just installed the edugeek package and the installation seemed to go well, but when I try to click on the colour switcher boxes nothing happens. Firegug reports: setActiveSyleSheet is not defined onclick(click clientX=0, clientY=0) site located at http://www.meretest.org.uk Any ideas of what I need to do to fix this? :?
