Thanks Arthur, I've spent too much time already trying to configure Linux based OS' (OpenSUSE, Thinstation, etc). It doesn't help having no linux knowledge at all combined with the fact that following through online guides step by step don't produce the expected results.. I'll try the Stripped down Windows 7 Method!

I can't seem to find an application that supports PCOIP to use in conjunction with Thinstation though... We have just bought a new Wyse terminal which has VMWare View 4.5 installed and supports PCOIP, surely its possible to install that application on any linux based system then? But where can it be downloaded from?

Hi, Any suggestion on what OS/Software can be used to convert old PCs into thin clients that are capable of running VMWare View Client with PCOIP? How would I go about getting it setup? Any guides anywhere? I've already tried this: vmware view linux live cd howto*|*Conrey.org but it didn't seem to run VMWare View on startup, just sat with desktop background, also apparently VMWare Open View client doesn't support PCOIP... @edutech4schools - Yes, the server only allowed us to install the 64bit version of the driver on the server. In order to add the 32bit version, I had to use a client PC, add the printer, then install the HP Universal PCL6 32bit version. This only had to be done once though! When a printer is now added on the server and we use the Universal Print driver, both the 64 & 32bit versions of the driver are made available to the client, but only the relevent one is used, according to the client architecture.

It is a 64bit Server! Knew there was something I forgot in the original post! I haven't had any problems with the drivers as we are using the Universal PCL6 driver, which somehow pushes the correct driver according to architecture to the client. Not sure if this is supposed to happen, but it does... I just had in my head that a script could be created that went something like: add printer --> local printer --> new port TCP/IP [iP address] --> [Printer/Share name] --> [driver to use] I could then go into the properties of each printer and specify the relevent security permissions manually.. @mdrabble - yes 126 printers all on one server is very much all eggs in one basket, but the powers that be think that simplicity (i.e. all being on one server) benefits over performance and reliability, but I don't want to go into that...lol

Hi all! A bit of background info: We have a print server, running Server 2003 with 126 networked and shared printers installed. My task that I've been given: Adding the 126 printers onto our new print server (Running Server 2008 R2), settings permissions and sharing. The computer manager has ruled out any sort of direct migration. Each printer has a set IP address, Location field and they all use a HP Universal PCL6 print driver. They then have permissions set as per requirements. My question is, what is the best way to get all 126 printers added onto the server? Or is it going to be a case of 'Add printer'... specify IP address, location, security settings all manually? My guess is it can be done by script somehow? If so, can somebody provide an example where I can then fill it the details and run from the server? Many Thanks.

Hi, We have a HP 2430dtn which keeps gettings an error stating 'Load Tray 2 Plain Paper'. The problem is, Tray 2 jams occasionally so the user prefers to use Tray 3. Up until today the user has always defaulted to Tray 3 and printed without any problems. I have checked the printers settings on the print server and even tried disabling Tray 2 and setting Tray 3 as the default source, but it doesn't appear to solve the problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply SYNACK. Yes, sorry didn't take that into consideration, we probably have between 10-20 different printer types. I was however, under the impression that 32bit printer drivers will work without problem on a 64bit print server? The reason we've gone for 64bit was because we will be gradually moving over to Windows 7 64bit (Windows 7 32bit first)

Hi, We are moving are print server from a 32bit Windows Server 2003 (Server15) to a 64bit Windows Server 2008 R2 (Server164V). We have over 100 printers. We want to start a fresh with the print server settings etc, but would like to retain the drivers we currently have. Is there a way of copying the drivers from old to new? Thanks!

Just thinking, as you all know, PCs can boot to Win PE, is it possible to install VMware View on a Win PE???

Thanks for the reply mister_z, I have tried the BIOS RAID Config utility, but it doesn't allow me to create a new RAID array, it only lists the Physical disks and gives the ability to configure virtual disks. See this link: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/RAID/PERC5/en/UG/PDF/ug_en.pdf As the server was going to be disposed of (As it was no longer needed) I thought I would use it for study purposes. Getting the disks formatted will just allow me to start with clean disks before installing an OS.

Starting to give up on this.. I can't figure out how I configure the disks as RAID 0

There isn't any sensative data stored on the drives so it wouldn't matter either way. I've done some 'Googling' and read through some forums, apparently I need to configure each drive individually as a RAID 0.

Ben, how do I initialise the disks on the controller :s sorry, like I said earlier, I have no knowledge of RAID arrays etc.

Ctrl-R brings up a PERC 5i Configuration utility, it had 1 Virtual disk listed, of which I have removed. There isn't an option to format though, I'll try installing Server 2008 then adding the remaining disks and try to format through disk management

I wasn't personally trying to throw it away, the powers that be were! When you say configure the RAID, I presume you mean using the original Dell disk? I think it says PERC 5/i or something during boot up. I'll give it a go anyway

That sounds about right, I used the Dell configuration CD and configured it as a RAID (Maybe it wasn't RAID 0). I've tried numerous bootable CDs to wipe the disks but nothing detects the drives. I've tried Seagate DIskwizard, mini Linux. Are there any you can suggest that would detect the SAS drives?

Sorry I didn't mention it before, yes RAID 0. (I don't have much experience with RAID arrays so go easy )

Hi, I've got 5 300GB SAS drives that I need to format. I've dug out a server (PowerEdge 2950) that was going to be thrown away that has a SAS controller. What is the best method for formatting the drives? I've tried installing Server 2008, it detects 1200GB at install stage, but after booting to the OS it only shows 500GB in Disk Management

Good idea... But, the USB sticks would probably be stolen over time... Would it be possible to PXE boot to a server with VM Ware client installed, then connect to the virtual desktop from there?

Hi, I have been given the task of finding ways of using VMWare View and virtual Windows 7 images in some of our computer suites. There are 3 suites consisting of between 20-30 PCs with Win XP installed. Ideally we would like to keep the PCs but use them as thin clients, rather than spending money on Wyse terminals or something similar. Firstly, what would be the best method for doing this? Which method would provide quickest boot time and connection to the virtual desktop? Any ideas? Thanks
