Hello Everyone, I would like to introduce to you a program on which we have been working a great deal lately. The version we are making available is a majorly stripped back animal from what we have deployed in our-school, but what we use in practice is very tailored and our-school specific. As a basic outline, it is a Removable Drive Blocker called Lock. Originally (i.e. in our current deployment) we used a room based approach, where we allow control over the locking mechanisms per classroom - as a primary. We have, of course, written other controls in to the original; per-user restriction control and automatic removal of unwanted files on their user areas. But these other functions are very customised and overly based on how we name our computers, rooms and usernames. So we are starting again. Our approach is now user centric and no longer our-school specific. We would like to shift towards allowing teaching staff better in-classroom controls and a simplicity which will allow incorporation of the facilities with their student behaviour management policies. But, we want to make this easy for us tech guys too. Lock v1.0 userbased basic, is a blanket removable drive blocker. If you want to completely stop the use of pen drives, USB hard drives and media cards then this is for you. It has its restrictions. It can only go on PC’s with a maximum of 2 fixed hard drives, as (so far) we have presumed that most PC’s in schools have only one internal hard drive. But it has its advantages, we have made it really very easy to deploy if you are using a mandatory profile for your students. I would certainly ask to see the curriculum. The teacher may have some misconceptions about how the course is supposed to go. But I would use VirtualBox machines and accounts with mandatory profiles. Surely you allow your teachers to right click etc so I would house the account in that OU.

Quite often universities will have posters about the courses they are running. We have some from Heriot Watt Uni about there BSc in Computer Science. We also have some from Bradford Uni.

You can write to a mandatory profile during a session. It just doesn't save when you logoff.

Dells are ok, although we struggle with lots of HDD failures in their servers. Toshiba motherboards break, both their onboard RAM and power input. I havn't had a HP die yet.

Backup your print server before installing printlogger. It killed ours after a conflict with the Oki LPR utility But now we have a much smoother running print server (fresh install) and are demoing Papercut. Its good, but I can't set filters to differenciate enough between users. I am probably going to go back to just the printlogger. Export the files from it and use SQL to generate bills for people. We static our classroom IP addresses in DHCP which causes less problems. It can be a bore putting in a large amount of DHCP reservations, but it's worth it. We have 410 netsupport client licences, most of those are on reserved addresses. Just remember to change the reservation if you change the network card. Adam

The error could be due to your hardware not being able to pass 500Mbps down a 100Mbps line. You could be getting a lot of interference from crosstalk and noise pushing 5 times the ideal amount of data across a CAT5e link. What lengths are the CAT5e? I would advise investing in a CAT6 cable for your server and trying at first to get a short CAT5e run to your RMNAS, which if works means you don't need a CAT6. You could look at pricing for ScTP CAT5 and STP CAT5 as opposed to CAT6 - if your tight on money, but I don't know how to prices vary (we just use fiber for Gb links). If you are getting a lot of dropped packets then you will be getting more control traffic plus the desired traffic and the lost/corrupt traffic; that could be causing you buffers to fill promptly. Then your control traffic goes up because your TCP window size decreases. And Netgear switches wont be the best on buffer size - at a guess. Hope this helps.... If you use the IP it will eliminate DNS problems. One less thing to worry about. How about putting the computer a lot nearer to the screen and using a KVM extender (e.g. Daxten Voyager Micro) to control the PC? Presuming the PC is networked and thats how it is going to access your rolling presentations. Or you could use a really powerful wireless keyboard and mouse.
