  1. I think I've worked it out, but don't fully understand why. Whilst testing this, in the GPO security filtering box I added the test computer name (which resides in the test OU linked to the loopback GPO). I have changed the security filtering to Authenticated Users and it now works ! As an aside I noticed it also works if you put a user name AND the computer name in the security filtering box, and then log on to that computer as that user but not not if it is only the computer name in the security filtering, presumably to do with delegations ?
  2. I wonder if anyone can help. I want to apply loopback processing. I have an OU for some computers which I have linked to a GPO with loopback processing merge enabled, in the User side of this loopback GPO I have made a few settings that oppose settings in the main staff GPO (eg I am enabling internet options menu as opposed to restricting them as this is what I want, I only want these opposed settings to apply for these computers in this GPO) When I log on to a computer in this loopback OU, the "opposed" settings do not apply ie internet options still disabled. My understanding is the computer in a loopback linked OU in merge mode will apply normal (in this case, staff policies and merge them with any applied in the user node, in my case allowing internet options menu, and that these take precedence over User's user settings, however this does not seem to be the case. Thoughts anyone, or am I missing something ?
  3. Hello Has anyone recently had a website professionally designed, eg e4education, What sort of approx £ costs are involved for the whole project ? Any help gratefully received.
  4. Has anyone gone from using their own Exchange server to Office 365 for email / calendars. What experiences have people had with this and would they recommend it ? Thanks.
  5. Hello I have been approached by a teacher to see if there is a way to turn off autocorrect in word (in order to help students' spelling!). Is there a way to do this by group policy, or any other way so it that is a network wide setting . (Office 2010, Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 Clients) Many thanks.
  6. Server 2008 R2
  7. I think I will set up WSUS, I only have a smallish network circa 110 machines. It looks fairly straight forward. Any pitfalls to look out for ? It won't be a dedicated WSUS server, I'll be adding the role to another server, I presume this should be OK ? Thanks
  8. Hello, a quick and simple question. With Windows Update do you have the "Give me updates for Microsoft products........" option ticked, or not, and therefore just receive important/recommended updates ? What do folks recommend ? Thanks
  9. Yes I have tried latest drivers from website, although not via Device Manager.
  10. I have a question re- installing printers and scanners. On a Windows 7 client, if I am installing a local printer I install the drivers from installation disc, all fine but then I connect the device and windows goes through the searching for drivers for 5+mins even though have just installed them. If I cancel the windows search it says not installed. So I have to let the windows search run, regardless if i have already used the installation disc. Am I missing something bleedin' obvious ? Any help gratefully received.
  11. What I am trying to determine here is why do so many schools use them if apparently they are pretty much meaningless. I assume most schools don't have a legal team, are there any directives from anyone saying we should have one ? Who in the school decides to have one, and why ? Is it just because the "school across town have them so we should too". I am just intrigued as to why they seem so popular, yet as far as I can see basically meaningless as per article mentioned above. Maybe someone who has one can say why, who, how they came to decision etc.
  12. OK, thanks. Maybe others in schools who do have disclaimers could explain what their reasons for having them are. Canyone else add to the discussion for or against ?
  13. Currently my school does not have any email disclaimer footers. I was thinking about adding one, (that in itself may be another question) but is there a reason why so many schools add one as it seems that there is actually very little legal effectiveness or real point to them, as far as I can see. The body of the email will have been read before the footer , making some statements irrelevent eg only to be read by addressee etc ! Please correct me if I am wrong. Is it a case of "other people do it , so we should too". Any info gratefully received.
  14. Yes it is
  15. Hello, my problem is getting Apple TV to work in order to mirror ipads. I have connected the Apple TV (wired) but I believe the firewall is blocking things as Airplay icon not showing on Ipad where it should do . Does anybody have advice on what ports to unblock, a trawl through the net seem to bring out differing responses. Thanks in advance.
  16. Yep looks like firewall settings. Everything is so easy when you know the answer. Ta
  17. I have an issue I don't understand. There are a number of PCs on my 2008 R2 Windows 7 network that I cannot Ping or connect to C drive using run command. The PCs are fine ie no problems users logging on, connecting to network shares or internet without problem. Why would I not be able to Ping them or connect remotely to C$ drive ? any advice gratefully received.
  18. I've got exactly same problem. I ran Server 2008 R2 updates recently. Updated IE to IE 10, Internet Explorer Maintenance disappears from Group Policy, so have to use Preferences, but can only see IEs 5 - 8, No IE 9 is shown in GP preferences, this is the one I need as my Windows 7 Clients use this.
  19. When I go to GP preferences / control panel settings/ internet setting son my Server 2008 R2 it only has up to IE 8 , all my Windows 7 clients are IE 9
  20. I think you've misunderstood me.
  21. I have server 2008 R2, recently ran updates , IE explorer 10 installed. So now Internet Explorer Maintenance does not appear in Group policy user config / windows settings. I have windows 7 clients with ie explorer 9 I would like to create a new additional policy for some users using a different Proxy, so how do I now achieve that now IE maintenance has gone ? The current Group Policy Objects concerning Proxy settings still seem to work fine. I have read that group policy preferences settings are just that ie preferences and can be overwritten, so am not sure to go that route, if anyone can help I'd be very appreciative.

  23. Not entirely sure what you mean by netsupport gateway but I think the answer is no. Client numbers is not an issue.
  24. Still no answer on this I contacted my support desk who had a Meru engineer on hand, and were unable to resolve so if anyone has had a similar isssue and since resolved it I'd like to know.
  25. I wonder if anyone can help. I use Netsupport, I was having an issue where student wireless laptops were not showing in any teachers' consoles. After a little investigation I enabled the udp broadcast (initially both up and down) on Port 5405 on the Meru wireless controller, it worked, client wirelss laptops now showed. However it was then brought to my attention that if a teacher console was on a wireless laptop itself it would not detect ANY machines, but as soon as the teacher laptop connected via ethernet cable all is fine, clearly an issue with the controller , but I'm not sure what. Does anybody have any ideas ?
