Just an update - solved this by using Telnet to connect to the switch and ran command to set those ports. Worked a treat

Hi all I have a new server that i have setup with teaming on the NICs. As well as this i have a new QNAP NAS box that i have setup with the NICs teamed up. Ideally i want both to be able to utilise LACP which im told needs to be setup on the switches as well. So now I am trying to setup LACP on the ports they are connected to but am having no joy. Not sure if anyone is familiar with Level one switches but we have a managed stack system and under the settings for the switch the server NICs are plugged into, i can go to Trunk and under Port i have all the ports and ready to configure them for LACP. http://www.pikipimp.com/pp/pimped_photo/s/image/58/461/198/LACP.jpg When i change the ports (in this case 20 + 21) i simply set the method to LACP, the group i set to a unique ID of 1 for both and then click apply. But this just sticks at this stage with it going nowhere. If i try to browse other settings on that switch it doesnt display anything. Only when i browse to another switch and go back do they reappear but nothing i changed remains and im stuck in a loop. Any ideas?

Yeah its installed on server - server is fine tested and all ok on different browsers. Seems the clients cannot see the certificate, trying to install it locally on some clients to see if it cures the problem for them

Hi, yes it does but it says "this certificate cannot be verified up to a trusted certification authority" Is the free ipsCA certificate not up to it then? *shock horror!* cant get anything for free these days

Hi all Bit of background on this - i wanted to have access to spiceworks helpdesk at home for staff. Enabled all the https settings and then got my LEA to add a new IP and a dns redirect on helpdesk.schoolname.co.uk (subdomain in our schoolname.sch.uk) to the spiceworks server. On the server i setup the default website on IIS for SSL connection to spiceworks and all works fine. Problem is i get the certificate error from outside the network and would rather everyone didnt have to click on continue every time. So i got my free CA certificate from SSL Certificates SSL Wildcard SSL Free Certificates SSL Server Certificate 256 bits for helpdesk.schoolname.sch.uk installed it on the server without issue. I then followed the SW guide to allocating the certificate to SW's (Assign Your Existing Public SSL Certificate To Spiceworks - Spiceworks Community) but still getting same certificate error. If i check the certificate details it gives me following: helpdesk.schoolname.sch.uk ipsCA Level 1 CA Valid from 05/04/2011 - 12/04/2013 Im worried i should have put it as https://helpdesk.schoolname.sch.uk ? I have also noticed since i imported the certificate onto the server the default website is now stopped? Not sure if related or whether that happens when certificate is installed on server. Any ideas?

This seems to have gone off topic - i dont want to get rid of the existing pidgeon hole just to add an electronic one. So the point is as described - to stop things like paper memo's, word of the day booklets etc. Getting staff to send emails rather than paper notes. Basically internal communications done by email rather than paper. Pete - finally a suggestion for how to achieve it! thanks for that - its something im looking into and if i do find something ill post it up.

Glennda - Ideally i wouldnt mind hosting it on Windows but was looking at the external webserver idea for the ease of management of php and mysql with their built in tools. Richard - Thanks for input but i know nothing about linux and to be frank dont want to. We currently have MRBS on the linux server that we have on site but cant manage as its LEA. The reason for looking now is that we can look after it ourselves as we recently had a load of data go missing but they dont make backups and cant restore anything.

Hi all Im looking for info on how to setup MRBS at our school. I have the documentation for the actual software install but wanted to get a dummies guide to how to setup a webserver (ours are linux and managed by LEA so dont want to get involved with that) and using PHP and MySQL etc etc as dont have much experience of this. Is there a web site package that will have something like phpmyadmin etc built in to make it easier to manage? Can anyone help? Thanks

Yeah we do have moodle Plexer - bingo my way of thinking Cant see me winning that battle though and in all likelihood yes there will need to be the pigeon holes for the post aspect but i hope that all other forms of communication will be electronic rather than paper based by offering something similar to what i want. Plus when if the system works as desired then it will push staff to use email more and maybe get external companies to contact via email and not post. Ive heard of a system working as we want it but just for voicemails, its getting it for emails too.

Morning all, Im looking at getting rid of paper memo's and other wastes of paper by introducing an electonic alternative. Ideally in staff room id like to have an electronic pigeon hole - where on a large display its split into honeycomb sections with staff members name and in there is maybe a display of how many emails or voicemails they have? Has anyone done anything like this and if so, how? Any alternatives to this if its not possible?

Still banging my head on this one! I have fiddled with excel and date from SIMS so have our 1400 student details in a spreadsheet. Using various formula's etc i have setup email addresses based on admission number in SIMS, alias email address on their [email protected], usernames on ST then year started then admissions number (ST07005423 for example). So i can populate the mailboxes fine and also with the source spreadsheet i can simply import new users at start of year and it will populate the rest of the info. The problem i have is getting my head around linking this info to the distribution lists - i want to have it so we can create form class and year group distribution lists. But im struggling to see how we can do it - unless i update each account every year with the latest form class and year (by populating fields such as Department and Postal Code with the year and form class) and then creating distribution lists each year for ones matching year and form - i cant see a simple way of doing it. For example - if i import all my users now everything will be correct. A year 7 called John Smith, adm No. 005000 will be setup as [email protected] and department set as form 7H and post code set as 7. Then i can do distribution lists for year 10's and form 7H by creating dynamic distribution lists for post code = 10 and department = 7H. BUT - next year with new year 7 intake little Johnny Smith wont be in year 7 or in form 7H. Only new users will be imported using csv or powershell and so Johnny's department and postal code will be incorrect. How can i get around this problem? How have people done it? there may be a simple way but my head is spinning at moment!

I see - so how do you then use that username with regards to the email groups? i.e. i want all Year 10 South pupils email - how does office live convert the username to that information?

I could look at this option - how do you do it based on usernames? Problem is with usernames say if i allocated usernames to pupils such as 8HJD, where 8H is form class and JD is initials, this will change yearly and so their email/logons will change. Another option is to have 9HJD, where 9 is the year joined, H is form class and JD is initials. This poses problems trying to work out what form class is i.e. 9 = Year 8 (joined 2009 now in Year 8!) and how you formulate this into a distribution list. Does that make sense ? I suppose the best way is that say SIMS is used to populate AD and so the form class is inputted in Department field in AD. Then ILM is used to sync Outlook live daily and so every year when records are updated via SIMS/AD it is then populated into the dynamic distribution lists. In meantime though will play around with what i have to see if easy way of setting up the year groups (these are in seperate OU's in AD) and also form classes.

That last point made me think a bit, tested it as student and current email system allows pupils full access to staff lists and addresses so in reality there may be no need to seperate them. I will look into dsmod for the AD population

Thanks Zag I have created simple groups such as All Staff and working through Departmental ones such as ICT, Art, SLT etc etc The issue for me was creating all the form classes and year groups. In AD as we are on RM CC3 network we have the year group folders but no distribution groups etc and other than manually going through adding pupils to form and year groups i was wondering if anyone for examply exported data from SIMS etc. As i know with dynamic distribtution lists if they have say a year and form field then you can create the DDL's using that data. Just not sure how do it.

Hi all I have a few questions that maybe some of you can answer - firstly if you havent seen it i have a thread here asking for advice on distribution lists http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/70418-live-edu-distribution-address-lists.html I also have some specific questions that some of you may be able to answer... - Seperating Staff and Pupil mail, i have read that a subdomain is no good for this as pupils will still be able to see staff on the GAL. Apparently you need a new domain for the pupils and then set mailbox as the disabled view option so they cant see any GALs. Then you add external contact lists for the pupil emails onto the staff domain setup? Is this correct? i want Staff to see all GALs but pupils to not see any. Current domain is [email protected] whereas a new one for pupils would be [email protected]. I had tried adding a new domain of pupils.schoolname.co.uk but imy domain provider said that would be a subdomain and therefore wouldnt work how i wanted it. How have people here done it? - AD population, we dont have any onsite exchange etc we currently use a web based email client. So in AD none of the users have populated email addresses. To import test accounts i exported user details into correct format and also added my own column for Email and using the concatenate formula in Excel created email address along the lines of [email protected]. I then imported them fine - now thats fine and worked well but in future i would like to use ILM and Olsync. But as AD isnt populated with staff email addresses i think ill have a problem. Is there an easy way of populating AD with email addresses from live@edu or a csv file? Stuart on the other thread mentioned dsmod as a way to do it? Im also looking at adding a cname alias so that when going to mail.schoolname.co.uk it directs you to outlook.com for the sign in. It seems though that this cannot be customised at all and only option is to setup a SSO page you can customise. Has anyone got around this or am i stuck with the boring outlook.com sign in page?!? No one? ok another question - we currently have no exchange etc setup on site so the email address isnt populated in AD. Is there a way of populating that with the live mail address once it has sync across? as far as i know the sync is only one way from AD to ILM etc?

Morning all I am looking at live@edu and am currently testing this on a seperate domain we purchased. Our goal is to move all staff and pupils to live mail for the start of next year. For email we currently use an LEA webmail system (squirrelmail) for both staff and pupils. It uses the domain of @school.area.sch.uk whilst the new domain would be @school.co.uk. The LEA uses SIMS data exported to them to create pupil and staff email accounts (specified csv format) - its also used to create pupil and staff timetables as well as distribution lists. They include form class lists, teaching class lists and year group lists. This is used quite regularly by staff and they are keen for any new system to allow them to do this. How do people create distribution lists in live mail at moment? As we dont have the AD structure for distribution lists i was wondering how people have created these?

What is the pricing then? im still waiting on these

We currently have 116 printers which are mixture of network and local and 7 of which are MFDs. We had a print audit recently which gave us these figures and our new plan is to increase the MFDs to 21 (inc utilising some of the newer network printers in our maintenance contract) and remove all local printers. We will then get papercut installed and manage all the printing in the school. Figures show this could save us 75k a year.

Hi all Im looking to setup a VLAN in our school purely for testing a new domain. I want the vlan to be seperate from the current domain and have no communication whatsoever. I have a spare Level1 GSW-2496 that i will be using but new to vlan's so after advice on how best to set this up. The GSW-2496 is attached to 1 of 2 core switches (both GSW-2496's) that both connect to our LEA's routing switch which is the gateway (Nortel PP 1424T) - that then is connected to the router. The LEA manage the gatewat/routing switch so we have no access so want to know how best to set our switches up so that the seperate vlan traffic is seperated to the core switches and the routing switch. I have tinkered with the new vlan switch settings by enabling the port-based vlan mode for all the ports on the switch. This works fine - the test server cannot see the other domain or anything on there at all. Im now looking at tweaking it a little to allow access to the web. The new test network cant see the gateway. How can i go about setting it up so it can see the gateway and get web access?
