Good News! Endpoint has been included in EES CoreCAL so we can get the client for free. Now need to look at how we deploy and update - SCCM managed or simply include client in our PC image and try to manage its updates....

Morning, We're looking at moving to Moodle and I'm in the process of trying to get staff on side. What we could really do with is student access to a couple of really impressive courses so that the staff can see what can be accomplished and get inspired. Moodle's own demo sites don't seem to do it. Anybody able to help? I'm more than happy to promote your school as 'Moodle leaders' PM me if you can help or point me in the right direction. Yep, we have just been quoted around £300 for our site to run Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection which price-wise blows all of the other out of the water. Are currently trying to to get it working with SCCM which is proving far harder than we imagined........we will succeed tho!!!! Especially at that price!!

Have had lots of good experience of Sophos in the past but don't think I could budget for £8000 Tallwood, although I'm imaging your site is pretty extensive?? Would defo be interested in how Forefront costs up under EES? Will put the call into our reseller tomorrow and let you know...

Any ideas why this doesn't seem to be taking effect on machines that the 'blocked users' have logged onto before??

Unfortunately its through the local authority and we don't have access rights to make changes.

Cheers for all the advice folks. We have just created another OU for the 'blocked internet' students and have linked an incorrect proxy policy to it. Any students in that OU can no longer access the internet :-)............unless they use a PC that they've logged onto before :-( If they do that then the internet is still accessible. Any ideas??

Anybody got a successful school group policy structure that they'd like to share? Do you have one policy linked to all students? A number of individual policies linked to all students? Different policies linked to different year groups? Also, we currently have a student policy that provides proxy server details. How do we create a policy to block certain students internet access when they are linked to the policy that supplies those details? Is a separate policy that only acts upon users in a 'blocked internet' security group going to work? Any advice would be really appreciated!!

Having just spent some quality time with our front office staff I have found out that this is how they create their standard letter. Apparently the cost of headed paper was too much so 'someone' cam up with this solution to print on new economical colour laser printers (as if they exist!)? Anyone else come across this? We are having serious problems with the way it interacts with SIMS. ***yes I do know how to spell boxes - brain not in gear!!***

Cheers for your reply Hightower. Do you think that permissions should be set at the Partition level though?? I thought that Share Perms, followed by NTFS would suffice but don't want to remove the Partition perms for risk of messing things up.....

Anybody fancy offering some advice on the best settings for this scenario? Have joined this school and some very strange permissions in operation!! We have a server with a partition, within that partition are three shares One for general staff/department files and folders One for students to access resources added by staff One for students to save files for submission to staff Weird thing is that there is read/execute permission granted to the domain users group on the partition level security!? Surely that isn't right? This also propagates right the way down to the share NTFS permissions and beyond. How would you guys configure the permissions? Any advice would be appreciated

We have had three instances of this only this morning. Watched one of the students finish his test correctly however it took him straight back to the beginning. Have a feeling that it might be down to running our internet connection through cachepilot and these specific students going back through their questions (as they are instructed to do) and changing answers from their first attempt. Will keep you posted.....

Hi Guys, Our Mac User's drive has taken a battering in the last 2 weeks with 82GB of content just appearing. All the home folders supposedly have a Quota of 2GB set in Workrgroup Manager but with User Areas at 44 Gig this clearly isnt happening. We want to set a 3GB Quota with a warning message for every user. How do we do this?

We are in exactly the same situation, they currently use a Colour Laserjet 2600n and the costs are ridiculous! Does everyone agree that any type of inkjet will just incur more costs? They like to print contact sheets - 8 thumbnails on each sheet. Quality isn't so much the issue - more reliability.

Hit an issue at the first fence! Installation requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, so I install this (the full package), installation completes, start to run install again - error message stating that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 did not install correctly! Have removed it, re-installed, re-booted, added patches as directed by Microsoft.......still fails. It looks as though the Framework isn't correctly installed as earlier .NET installs in Add/Remove Programs shows components such as - WPF2, WF_32, WPF_1 etc Wheras 3.5 SP1 just shows a couple of Hotfix components!? Anyhow, I have just installed .NET 4 to see if that kicks it into touch - have scheduled a reboot to coincide with lots of finger crossing. I'll let you know how it goes.... If anyone else has hit this then please share... Cheers Simon

Looks like my predecessor had managed to include our main staff security group in another with 'Full Control' and therefore any changes made to perms at folder level were being overiden - hence effective permissions always being 'Full Control'. Have now removed that and can control access with that staff group. Thanks for your help as always! Simon

Do you suggest using Deny? I can get it to work that way but assumed that the NTFS perms themselves being more restrictive would take control. Do you think its something to do with the NTFS permissions at the Share Level? Therefore even if I remove the group from a folder members of that groups are still getting access?

Hi, We have a share on one of our servers for which 'Everyone' has Full Control. Staff are members of a security group which tightens up the security on that share and its folders.....or so you would think. Regardless of the perms we give to this staff group they still end up with Full Control. Even if I create a new folder, switch off inherited permissions, remove the staff security group........they still have Full Control. I know its probably something easy but just can't get my head around it - please put me out of my misery.... Cheers

You don't realise just how much time you have saved me - it resolved the issue perfectly!! Thanks heaps! Obviously all of the other XP PCs in the school have had this deployed by WSUS. Need to work out why these recently built PCs did not receive the updates. Cheers Simon
