Same problem here on the EMBC. Streaming video sites that work fine on the same iPad on my home wireless network (Vimeo / Animoto) and our GApps service will not work in school. The only difference is I have no EMBC proxy running at home. Our technician has said other schools have also run into the same issue. Unfortunately the solution doesn't seem to available at the moment.

Initially, each iPad needed to be synced to a machine running iTunes, renamed (I named that schoolname01 - 10), and then it was a case of updating the firmware as there had been an update since they were sent to us. Wi-fi set was a doddle, it found the network, I added the password, added the proxy address and it was done. Beyond that it was mainly cosmetic changes - altering the brightness, time before it turns off, adding an email account (I set up a school_ipad account on googlemail, and used the +1, +2, +3 trick to give each iPad an accountable address (oh, and I also have the ipad account on my machine so I can see what was sent / received on those email addresses)), and re-arranging and adding some apps on the docking bar. That was it in terms of set-up. App adding is done on a single machine or via iTunes (only me and the HT have the password to sign into and download apps). Once new apps are added, a weekly sync ensures that all iPads are updated with the same apps. Interestingly we had the technician in on Friday to update some things on the school network and laptops we have, and it took him significantly longer to each machine than it takes to sync an iPad.

We've just taken delivery of 10 iPads for the junior school I work at this week. They are quick and very easy to use. We compared the time it takes to find some information from the internet using an iPad, and a laptop. For the laptop we watched the pupils switch, log into the network, wait for a profile to be fetched and then find some information. This took around 3 minutes. With the iPad, they simple pressed the home button, slid the on screen switch, loaded an app and got the information within a minute. In terms of using ICT effectively in the classroom, they win hands down at providing information. We haven't used them for word processing / presentations yet. We are waiting to add Apple's Pages / Keynotes apps soon. As mentioned by another member, we have put dropbox onto each iPad to allow pupils to save their work. This should allow staff to use their own machine and see the work created. As with any new technology there are initial problems. We are finding that the RBC proxy does not allow us to stream videos from our school Vimeo account onto the iPads (although the videos do work on the laptops), and https:// websites (like Google Docs) will not load. Our LA ICTSupport service are looking into these issues with the RBC, but as we seem to be one of the first - if not the first - school in the county to be using them, no one is 100% sure at the moment how to sort out the issues!
