Any one else had this issue? I've narrowed it down to an issue with an MS Service that starts on logon? sfc /scannow has not solved this.

Hello everyone. I have a question if anyone has seen this before - I have Windows Server 2016 VM installation that has a black screen with cursor when pressing Ctrl Alt Del to logon - not after logon! I get the good old windows 2016 splash page as per normal, but as soon as I try to logon on startup - black screen and cursor - not even a logon page. I've seen that pesky black screen a few times after you logon but never before - odd. the VM boots in safe mode and without the services started - but start with the services started - the black screen is back on logon I've removed the Anti Virus and any other possible programs but with no luck.. Any ideas?

Lightspeed, Unifi and RADIUS issues
doombadger replied to doombadger's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We do. We train key members of staff to assist them - but normally its a queue in outside my door for the stragglers. Used to use the BBC until that became more secure. I find its just a bit more consistent. Lightspeed sits between my school LAN and my Firewall and only intercepts the traffic on the School LAN not the restricted Guest LAN. We are multi function building so our events team and our lets use the Guest LAN. Just easier not to involve Lightspeed with any out of school events. Does mean constant password changes and monitoring of the Guest traffic through our UniFi controller, just in case any student gain access to it. -
Lightspeed, Unifi and RADIUS issues
doombadger replied to doombadger's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
This all sounds very similar to our issues.. Everyone knows http://lsaccess.me/login in our organisation. Our restricted Guest network is VLAN'd bypasses Lightspeed and works like a dream. I'd be interested in how you get on with Relay as I feel my Rocket Appliance was very good six years ago when it was installed, but I feel its now rather long in the tooth and not fit for our needs. Thus I have a call setup with Smoothwall in 10mins to see what they have to offer (we moved away from them six years ago for similar reasons as I'm finding lightspeed) I hope they have improved! -
Lightspeed, Unifi and RADIUS issues
doombadger replied to doombadger's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Good Morning, thanks for the reply.. Spot on - bottle rocket on site. Lightspeed gets the RADIUS logon requests - then the log off - It then defaults to the Captive Portal Page that then allows the user to authenticate. Trouble is on any Android device on PIE 9 the OS will not show the captive portal page as its HTTP and not HTTPS thus no authentication with Lightspeed. The original call to lightspeed was for a workaround for this. There answer 'use RADIUS' ! So stuck in a loop. -
Lightspeed, Unifi and RADIUS issues
doombadger posted a topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Good Morning All, We have a Lightspeed Rocket appliance which has real issues with RADIUS and Unifi. The Lightspeed appliance is receiving the Radius logon requests then almost immediately a logoff request. We've followed the process with Lightspeed support, but they cannot track down where these logoff request are appearing from? Has anyone else had these issues with these appliances and Unifi? As I'm thinking now of changing my Filtering Vendor as our license renewal with Lightspeed is due soon Thanks for any feedback! -
Good Morning all, I have a problem I've not seen before and I'm looking for some advice.. We have boarders at our school with personal devices. I'm expected to give basic IT support to these devices "to keep them happy!" at the start of term.. Soon after they signed the school internet usage policy I had a crackdown on proxy bypass and Free VPN sites. I'm now seeing student personal macbooks arriving at my door unable to connect to our school Guest WiFi and being allocated local DHCP addresses, the common theme with these seem to be hastily removed 'FreeVPNs' Resetting network setting doesn't seem to do the trick nor does swapping WiFi networks from WPA to Radius and back.. I'm tempted to say 'your mess you sort it out!' and pack them off to the apple store. incidentally I've seen it on iOS and well.. Any ideas? Doombadger

Good Afternoon, A simple question I hope! I've a quote from my supplier for my final year renewal cost of my existing 3year OVS ECC agreement, I also at the request of management got a quote from another supplier - this is considerably lower in cost! Can I change suppliers or am I stuck until the end of the agreement? Thanks in advance!

Office 365 Licensing with full Office 2016 Brain overload
doombadger replied to doombadger's topic in Licensing Questions
Thanks Trapper.. We already have a 3 year EES agreement in place, Not sure I've seen those keys! I'll have to have a chat with our reseller regarding that... -
Good Afternoon all, I'm in the middle of sorting out our licensing for the coming year and as is the way, getting more confused the deeper I delve into it! Bottom line is we'd like an Office 365 subscription, but with office 2016 still locally installed, rather than the web only version you get with your free education version. from what I could work out, back in the day - that would been a nice upgrade from A2 to an A3 subscription... Now I'm being bombarded with all sort of E3 subscription stuff and monthly user subscriptions to office 365 pro plus for faculty and student... Frankly I'm in need of a lay down as my grey matter dribbles out my ears! any one can point me in the right direction!

Ok.. I've removed permissions for local users for the share - great that clears up the issue of viewing the folders, but I it has highlighted two other issues - one, users in the AD staff group now cannot access their drives at all and that the Windows Server now cannot browse Active Directory for me to add in the staff group to sharing permissions.
-
I'm connecting using the directory utility mapping the home drive share as specified in AD - I wouldn't doubt that Windows security is the key to this, I'll give the 'effective permissions' tool a go and see what I can find..

Hi.. looks like all staff that logon to the macs are given 'read modify' rights in OS X on any folder on our staff shared area - which is a bit of an issue really! Looking at the window server share security in Windows on the folder it reads.. creator owner has special permissions system - full permissions domain User whose folder it is (eg BloggsJ) - full permissions Local Administrators (server) - full permissions Local Users (server) - Read Execute
-
Good Evening, It's just been flagged up to me that a member of staff can view all other members of staff's Windows file Server files on our AD integrated macs - Security on the Windows shared are set correctly - why is it that this user can completely 'bypass' windows security and view these files? and how can I stop this happening? I'd love to know..

Good Morning Again, I've a issue with a brand new byod laptop with the window 8 imbedded version of Skype, how do I put the proxy settings for my Smoothwall filtering box into the new fancy setting interface! Thanks in advance! Doug

Good Morning all, I've got a bit of a problem with internet speed only at peak usage times around the school, we are experiencing an odd slow down issue, website addresses take around 3 minutes to resolve in multiple different browsers (IE Firefox Chrome) but once they resolve they are downloaded in milliseconds. We have a fast connection speed (fibre 100mb) and 1Gb internal network speeds two DNS servers running 2008 and forwarders with google top of the list. smoothwall filtering and a Cisco ASA box. Does anyone have any other possible ideas? would DNS Server loading be an issue? thanks in advance! (oh and peak usage is around 80 users!)

Good Morning all, As part of a existing backup solution I've purchased a new SAS HP G2 Tapestorage device, very nice it is too! But I've had to install it on different server to our enterprise copy of ArcServe R16 (old server with no slots left that can handle SAS) Now the question is... Can I locate the tape drive accross the network like my NAS box or do I have to install ArcServe now on the server with the tape drive attached? Thanks in advance! Doug

Good Morning, I've had a request to 'Reset User Profile in Windows Active Directory' as part of a request call this morning. Can any one shed any light on how this is done? I remember doing plenty of these using the console in RM CC3 but on a Vanilla Windows 2008 domain I'm stumped! any ideas? Doug

Good Afternoon, I'm having a big issue with roaming logons on a Server 2008 domain with Windows 7 and Vista.. the vast majority of users over the site cannot logon as all it does is sit at 'please wait for the user profile server and then fails the logon' the error logs tell very little and I have rebooted all major servers and switches without success! and I'm frankly running out of ideas? Anything I'm missing? Doug

[sims] Pesky Reports! Unable to Open Macro Storage Word 2010 [Solved]
doombadger replied to doombadger's topic in MIS Systems
All tested! Didn't work but by applying a bit of lateral thinking to what you told me bossman I've solved the issue! Turns out it was Word thinking the templates came from an unsafe source and blocking them, so a quick play with the protected view setting and we have reports that work! Hurrah! Thanks again for your help! Doug -
[sims] Pesky Reports! Unable to Open Macro Storage Word 2010 [Solved]
doombadger replied to doombadger's topic in MIS Systems
Hi Thanks for the reply Bossman! Did use the OCT and then imaged it, you are correct all the installations are using that image. I'll do an install from the office disk and see if that helps.. Ta! Doug
