If you are considering third party programs, Diskeeper is a reliable program.

Install Diskeeper Server edition, its really easy on the resources and is one of the best automatic defraggers available. You will not have to check on when to defrag as it will do it when needed. We have it at work and there are no hitches whatsoever. I have the home edition installed on my system and it works great.

I'd simply recommend Diskeeper. Its excellent for pro active automated background defragmentation. You can just install it to run in the background and it will defrag whenever needed. The 2007 edition has a real time on the fly defrag which is cool. Saves the hassle of scheduled tasks or manual defrag. I am an advocate of regular disk cleanup and defrag of the system for optimum performance. Guess it would depend on each user as to how much to do it!
