License-wise, the free HyperV 2012 product comes with 0 VM licenses. You could stick as many license-free Ubuntu VMs on it as you want, but for each Windows Server VM you create, you should have a license to cover it. HTH

We've looked into adding a 2012DC into our existing 2008RC ADDS environment. The recommendation from Microsoft is to ensure that the FSMO roles are on the latest OS version (i.e. none of the roles on 2008R2 where a 2012DC exists). HTH
