Got a curious one here I can't seem to resolve. We have lots of wireless laptops connecting using Dlink APs and WPA/TKIP/PEAP to authenticate using a Radius server. This works fine, the laptop authenticates as the machine name, then the user authenticates and has a normal login and network environment. However, I've noticed that I can't ping/manage/VNC/etc any of these laptops - UNTIL that laptop makes a connection to my PC (or whatever one I'm using), then I can ping/VNC/etc OK until a reboot/logout. This is a bit frustrating and I've tried everything I can think of! Disabling the firewall makes no difference (XP SP2) Its a bit bizarre that PC A cannot ping Laptop A until Laptop A has pinged PC A - then they will commuincate fully! For a quick test I reset the AP/laptop back to simple WEP and everything worked,so it must be tied into the Radius/WPA security?

Its a bit of a vague area. I don't condone the use of copied DVDs here but I can't actually stop it - I just won't support them! Same goes for this vixy.net, people are bringing in video clips made by that site that don't work, and expect me to fix it for them.

We're getting a lot of staff asking to use vixy.net to rip youtube videos (as youtube is blocked by the web proxy). Question is, this is of pretty doubtful legality. Anyone else use this site or had requests to allow it? As vixy.net allows you to save content from youtube in an alternative format, it sounds about as legal as copying commercial DVDs!

So, in other words - the job and the money is about the same, but the way the schools do it varies as much as it does in the public sector. Theres a few private schools around here that I would guess are large enough for their own NM. I like my job here - but BSF is too much of a threat to ignore. In County Durham (where I live, not where I actually work), a lot of NMs are being tupe'd or simply not being told their future yet. Our area is scheduled for 2009 - but we are a voluntary aided Catholic school which might slow things down a little (hopefully!) I'm considering my options - jump now to somewhere 'safer', or wait for the inevitable and then work in Tesco when the chop arrives! I've worked in the private,commercial,industrial and educational sectors - ICT has always been the boom and bust job. As soon as the demand and salaries have peaked, then the sector looks to outsource (or PFI) en masse!

I'm a Network manager in a secondary school and I'm curious to know if there are any NMs who work in Private schools or colleges? I've never seen private school NM jobs advertised in my area and I'm suspecting private schools/colleges/universities will be the only places for me to find a job when BSK kicks in. If anyone does work as an NM in a private school, can you tell me what the job description is like/payscales etc? I know of several private schools in my area and will be approaching them shortly.

I'm looking into opening remote access to our network by setting up Citrix PS and giving the users access to the school network applications etc. I can cost the licensing of Citrix, and the MS TS CALS, but one question no supplier has answerd confidently is that of licensing the Office 2003 users. We have around 300 licences for Office 2003 Pro, bought in various sized blocks (Select agreement). What I'm trying to find out though is if I have to buy an extra Office licence for every remote access user that logs in or for only for the number of concurrent remote users? We have 200 users who will use this, but only 30 at a time, and 30 licences is a lot cheaper than 200!

I tried this a while ago, and it didn't go very well and Sophos weren't a great deal of help. Basically it seems to involve a fresh installation, and then running a startup script (provided by Sophos) on the clients to redirect to the new server and force them to get a new certificate to allow them to connect to the remote management system. It all worked as soon as the scripts ran on the PCs. This was on the older version 1.0 console, but I would assume the process is similar.

Shirts and ties for us, apart from holidays when scruffy gear is allowed. Plea to SMT to wear casual gear such as polo shirts went unheard fell on deaf ears.

Hi, I'm not sure if anyones asked this before, but what storage space does anyone generally allow their Staff and students (using quotas or similar) We tend to allow 120Mb -500Mb per student (depending on year and individual needs) and a 1gb for Staff (until they run out and ask for more!) Mailboxes are 15-50 Mb for students and 100Mb for Staff (again,until they run out!) Removing old year groups helps, but the storage demand goes up quickly every year

That Qres looks interesting - whats the res.exe? Ideally this could be used with parameters in a startup script.

Just as an aside to this post - where did you get the Res.exe from to change the screen resolution on boot? I've been looking for a simple scripting way to do this and so far have found the best way would be to write my own!
