Hello and good afternoon, I was not sure if this is the right area to be posting this but it is internet related. My school has gone wireless and purchased a NETGEAR WC7520 Prosafe wireless lan controller with wireless nodes. Basically this is my first time working with wireless on a business scale and so, we have got 2 vlans one for guests and one for students and teachers, my boss wants it so if they bring in there laptops or mobile devices they get filtered I have looked on the controller for an option to force it to go through the smoothwall proxy server, so that when they connect to the network they are filtered. Am I thinking along the right lines? I dont have much experience with the proxy server or the wireless controller so if some one could point me in the right direction then that would be cool. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread, I have got the users mailboxes up using CSV files which was a butt load of work but its done literally I have one thing leaft to do and I am wondering if anyone has done it yet? Have your organised your mailboxes into departments e.g. Admin, Teachers, Students if so how do you do it using Exchange online?

With Live@Edu is there a way of setting it up so I can get it running and use my email address as the guninea pig and then when I want to add the other users I just add them and deploy it?

What data am I putting into the CSV is it just there email addresses?

Ok I have just looked up the domain and our schools domain is already in there and the MX record appears to pointing to our email server, as further as I can tell what do I need to do next? If we just start with the users that have outlook, what do I need to copy or do?

Ok cool thank you very much, I now understand the concept it does not seem too bad, my manager kindly set up the initial account so literally I can log on into the service management portal but I have no idea of where I am going or what I am doing. I do not know much about the mail server as its managed by a company of which we pay for support but if I explain things it might make a bit more sense, when I arrived we had 2 isolated domains, an admin domain and a curriculum domain and we had a bridge between the two. the admin users use outlook and connect to the email server the outlook mail profiles are stored in there home areas so they can be backed up. When I would setup an account I would just point it to the mailserver 192.168.0.5 via pop and smtp and then I would type in the users credentials and test to ensure it works and thats it. Whilst the curriculum staff and students use thunderbird and when there accounts are created in active directory the mail addresses and inboxes are automatically created and there mailboxes are stored in a shared folder on the network. When launched the application simply asks for the correct credentials and fetches there emails. we recently did a domain merger but the email system stayed the same and thats how has been ever since and as time are changing the users and staff especially want to be able to access there emails from home and as budgets are tighter than a glamour models suitcase I know this kind of seems irrelevant however hopefully it gives you a better insight into what I am working with. I just need to take this above and spank it onto live at edu, and management want us to do it yesterday.

Thank you for your replys, at the moment we have an in house system which uses pop and smtp so if i was to manually setup a user I point the pop to 192.168.0.5 and the smtp to 192.168.0.5 and as long as they enter the correct credentials it downloads the email, our system means that currently we cannot use email externally. The aim is to be able to use the email externally, and they want the inboxes to be stored in the "cloud". The number of users would be around 500-600 all staff and students I would imagine. As far as time frames they want it doing as soon as possible naturally! How do I migrate the current inboxes to the cloud because it doesnt matter how good this new system is if the admin users cant access there previous emails then in the enviornment I work in it will be considered rubbish. I will hopefully be migrating all of the staff and all of the students to this system, and realistically I would like the user management to be as easy as possible and this csv sounds like a good idea but how manageable will it be? Hello and good evening I am wondering if you can help me please. Me and my fellow collegue have been tasked with setting up live@edu by our boss at the moment we have our emails coming through to a ubuntu email box which as far as I am aware just reroutes the emails to the relevent email boxes on our curriculum server I apologise if this is a rather vague description but it is setup and maintained by a 3rd party company and so I do not know too much about it. What do we need to do to get it setup? Thank you Josh.

yes, that is true as we have admin users of which do not go through the proxy as present so literally it renders our plan pretty much useless as if we turned around and forced all users to go through the proxy management would over rule us as soon as someone complains, unless there is a way of configuring smoothwall to allow internet via mac address of the machine, so if one of the sixth form gave a student the key for the wireless, they couldnt use it unless we had added there mac address to smoothwall or even the router, ok putting the internet filtering to the side for a second, how do I have it so the users can only access there home areas?

Cool thank you -K.C.Leblanc- The switch we are using in this perticular room is a Gigabit Netgear 24 port switch model number JGS524 -Dos_Box- As we are an independant school and we never have no where near the maximum number, but if we ever did have to consider a large amount then yeah I agree we would need to go to something a bit more substantial. -Brpilot99- proxypal looks amazing but, I wouldnt want to give the kids the option of turning off and on the proxy server because they could just go unfiltered at any given time. Thank you all for your input, so literally what do I do lol ive got the general concept of where I need to be going do I need to configure the router other than the fact that I need to set a form of encryption with a passcode and set the router with a static IP, do I need to do anything to my proxy server? And what do I need to configure for the vlan? literally I know these seem simplistic questions but I have only ever configured a small wireless netgear router at home, and you have to start off somewhere.

Hello and good morning, a few months ago I made a post asking about intergrating wireless into our sixth form common room and I was a bit vague in what I was asking and I thought I would give a comprehensive explanation and hope someone can help me please. Basically recently I was asked if we could intergrate wireless into our sixth form common room, untill then our school has literally been all wired. The aim of this is to enable the sixth formers to come in with there laptops and we will provide them with the wireless key. They must go through the proxy server to have filtered internet, and access to only 3 shared folders and there home area. This room consists of 6 workstations which all use Windows XP and get DHCP addresses from the (server 2008 r2) and a HP Laserjet 2600 printer which uses a static IP, all of the network points in this room connect up to a Gigabit Netgear 24 port switch model number JGS524 for your information. We are planning on connecting a Netgear ProSafe Wireless-N access points model number WNAP210. Personally I must say I have not ever configured a group policy and will need a little bit of an explanation what to do. I have a few questions on this if someone could answer this for me that would be brilliant please. How does it work for the clients, because as far as im aware literally usually if we want a client to use the proxy (smoothwall) we have to go to the internet settings and go to the proxy settings and put in the address so that they can access the internet, so how do we have it so they are filtered via smoothwall without having to change any browser settings? Usually the Client machines that we own are locked down, how do we set it so that when the students connect to our network with Macbooks, Windows 7 Machines, Windows Vista Machines and such only can have access to the areas we want? If you could help I would be immensly greatful! So as a summary we want filtered internet access and access to only 3 shared network drives and there documents. Thank you very much! Josh.

Hello and good morning, I am trying to set wireless access in a sixth form common room, however i need to be able to filter the users access and to make sure that they cannot browse across the network. On our workstations we have a lockdown policy which is done by a login script and defined policies. I have heard there is a way using active directory to restrict what the users can and cannot do, please can someone give me a walkthrough on how to do this if possible and it is a feasable option or we use smoothwall here if I can use that will be useful. We are using windows 2008 server, our workstations use xp but the students may have ipads imacs iphones, windows vista and windows 7 laptops so I really need a global solution but I need to use the resources I already have because the budget is tighter than a marmite jar, any help would be fantastic thank you.

Hello and good afternoon, I am wondering if you can help me, we have little or no money and we have to stretch our budget well dare I say what budget like a teacher does blu-tack as we all know how scarce that is in a school! I am wondering if anyone knows anywhere where I can buy refurbished machines, all I keep finding are this rubbish dell optiplex's which the display driver from dells website gives a blue screen of death! :/ good ol' dell! please if your school/college/university is updating its ICT infrastructure please let me know we can buy them from you if there any good! We are looking at anyone and anywhere! ideally we are after a machine which is at least a p4 and a min of 512mb ram for about £80 a piece. Please be our saviour haha! thank you Josh Jacklin.

Hello, im wonder if someone has got some advice for me one of my jobs here at the school is to do a hardware and software inventory, now ive got all this information in excel and stuff which i have written down as well and i want to put it in an easy to access format where I can pull up any information that management wants when ever they want it, microsoft excel with visual basic is amazing except i dont know visual basic and the time it would take me to play around with it is a waste of time, I also have thought of access but of course im not too familiar with it, when i have looked on google as you do, its all companies wanting you to install software which will scan your network and do an audit, which is all well and good if it actually tells me what I want to know and is either open source or freeware. to give you an idea of the information i have got, we use a logging system here where we provide allocation numbers to equipment, so we have seton labels and have our company name and then a number like 100512 and then in excel that will have 100512 Video Seven Monitor, Model Number, Serial Number, Location and Previous location. which is all well and good, however I want to put in a technical specification for the machines and things i need it to be really indepth as they have got a thing on at the moment and i want to provide them with more information than they can shake a stick at but at the same time in an easy way. For example if I wanted to say x amount of machines are failing this is the technical specification, doing a simple ram upgrade may increase the speed of the machine but of course this is not the way forward when your doing an upgrade hirachy, new at the top rolling the older machines down the chain to get rid of the obselete equipment on a shoe string budget. before you laugh we have shuttle x machines here, and the power supply has a fault if it is off for a long period of time it fails, shuttle know about this only suggest to buy a new part £50 a psu, times 3-4 maybe even 5 machines a week failing its not cost effect just replacing psus i could provide a chart or graph. yes thats off on a tangent a little bit but im trying to give as much information as i can to get the best possible help i just need to know how to go forward before i waste a stupid amount of time. Hi Again, I have been trawling the internet for about an hour now trying to find a solution to this problem, well i have since i started here but im fed up with it as its a real thorn in my side. Basically in some instances when i try to set up an outlook account, bearing in mind that it is Microsoft Outlook 2003, It fails on me, im trying to set up a pop account to our mail server, and its only on some machines it does this so i am 100% certain it must be the workstation im on. I put in the users name, the username and the password, and put in the details for out mail server which is 192.168.0.5 both on the pop and the SMTP now the ports are usually unchanged and there is no SSL. When i test the account I get, "Send Test E-mail Message: The specifed server was found, but there was no response from the server. Please berify that the port and SSL information is correct. To access these settings close this dialog, then click more settings and click on the advanced tab." I have trawled through many forums and have tried changing the SMTP port to 2525 but i know 25 isnt blocked, but i thought i would humour the idea, and have checked everything. Its a complete fresh install, and its frustrating, I hope im not the only one experiencing this! Any Ideas please? oh and also if you create a thread, and your done with it how do you close it, or dont you does a moderator manage that! Thank You!!

well its more that my boss has asked me to look as we want to organise contacts lists like one big list that everyone pulls contacts from but one for the kids and one for the staff, I know that may be something entirely different of which but I was asked to investigate clients, then I asked more and that was the answer I recieved.

Well, more information sorry i was a bit vague, we have a windows 2003 server environment and all of the work stations are on xp, we do have a mail server at the moment which uses debian, but thats all i know about it, at the moment we use thunderbird but my boss is reluctant to use outlook on the childrens workstations.

Hi, Here at the moment in our school with all of the kids we use the thunderbird client, which is all well and good but we are looking for something a bit better, any suggestions please. The preference that it would be free but a costing solution wouldnt be out of the question.
