Not really sure if this belongs here but here goes.... [rant] We are having problem with our site staff, especially when it comes to moving deliveries and equipment. My question to everyone on here is this.. How do you guys manage this situation in your workplaces? Does anyone know of any ITIL or FITS recommendations or H and S issues, training needs etc, for the movement of equipment especially IT related items. Our site staff believe that as we are a department of three blokes we should move our own stuff. I for one did not graduate from uni with a computer science degree, and hold multiple MCP certifications to move boxes, just because the under qualified site manager says so. No where in my job description does it state parcels are to be moved by us, it does however in theres state they are to move all goods in. I leave this matter open for discussion Thank you. [/rant]

Hello All, Had a quick search but couldnt really find what im after, but here goes: We have just purchased a brand spanking new file server We are replacing the old one with the new one The new one runs server 2003, old one runs server 2000 Problem: Is there any easy way to copy all the data i.e staff and students saves areas from the old server to the new one? With this we hope to retain the folder shares, for mapped drives, and also the security permissions applied to these folders. Is there any way of doing this without having to reshare and set security permissions on the folders once copied to the new server? Thanks in advance.

We have just implemented Frog in our school, we have had some good experience with the system. Yes it is a bit of a non-standard system, but it does implement well with AD and sims.net, it is also quite intuative, takes a bit of getting used to, but after a short time it all kind of clicks into place. Getting the staff to move towards using it will probably be your biggest challenge in implementing it. We held a training Inset day. The idea of the day was to get staff introduced to it, by showing the features it offers. The staff were very impressed especially when I showed how the intergrated Room controls work, to allow or deny access to internet. The key to the day was to get staff to think about how they could use the VLE to allow their resources to be used well, and how they can create their own image on the VLE by creating Faculty Websites. We had them all working on paper to design a template that they could use for their faculty page, using a basic list of design specifications. we found this worked quite well as it got all the staff involved, even the non IT literate staff, later in the day we walked them through how to start creating the pages in the VLE toolkit itself. We now no longer have a morning briefing or cover sheets printed, all information is provided on the front screen to the VLE or emailed, which you access by having to login, hence having to use the VLE to do their daily tasks, while they are in they then have the freedom to investigate it more at their own pace. Currently all staff have accounts and use it on a daily basis, it was only implemented to staff in february, but all are now using it to a basic level, and some are using to create pages to use in lessons. We are rolling it out to all students from september. The key to making this kind of system a success is to show the benefit of using it, branding it to make it your own, and giving the staff just the gentlist of pushes into using it. For example when they come and ask you to put some files on a shared area, suggest possibly using the VLE to create a page linking to the files, possibly customizing it to make it fuc for the kids. As for the company that provides it, Frogtrade, we have had a good relationship with them, I personally have found them extreamly helpful, the technical team are extreamly knowledgable, not only with their product but with other standard technical details, regarding integrating it with your network and existing MIS such as SIMS.net in our case. The development team are very helpful also, if you ask them for suggestions on how to implement a feature or customize it for your purpose they are always forthcoming with the information. From the start of the implementation of the VLE they have been very keen on helping us through it, and are always keen to listen to your own ideas for future development of the VLE, not just for yourselves but system wide changes such as new features for the email system or room controls for example. So far it has been quite a success, we are yet to see how we fair with the kids, but if introduced correctly I think it will be successful. For the implementation of this kind of system, it needs to start with some good planning of how you want to use it, what you want to use it for, and how you will get the people to adopt such a system, it cannot be forced on them, they have to be seen as part of the process. FrogTrade insist that the VLE is your product not theirs, they provide the basic system, you can customize it as much or as little as you want, if you need help from them they will provide it, if not your are free to experiment and share your experiences. Have to say big thank you to Lee Hardy and Jonathon North from the technical team, these guys are brilliant and really know their stuff.

Hello, I have just aquired a blackberry 8700g on an o2 contract. I have got my BIS setup and works fine for pushed emails from my BIS address. ([email protected]). My question is this.. Does anyone know how to either setup email forwarding on a blueyonder/virginmedia email account. To forward them automatically to my BB account. or Setup an email account on the blackberry manually to check the account on a regular basis, so not pushed to the phone, but the phone pulls emails at a set interval Thanks in advance

Converting VHS videos to either DVD or file format
sycho666 replied to ctbjs's topic in How do you do....it?
At our school, we have a VHS /DVD combi player. We just do a straight copy from VHS to DVD using this. Just start it going and leave it to it. Samsung make a reasonably good one, for not too much money. Try the Samsung DVD-VR320. Only problem we have found with it, when copying from VHS, if the tape is dodgy, and breaks up, then the player interprets this as the tape has finished, therefore stops the copy. You just need to restart it, and it carries on, but if its a really bad tape you could be doing that all day. -
Hi All, I was wondering if anybody has any idea on some software that I can use to remotely shut down pc's based on a time schedule eg, all pc's in school shut down at 730 at night. Is there any tools that will pull names from active directory, or link in to the interface. I have used a command line version of a tool, using a ini file with the pc names in, however our pc names sometimes change, eg after a reclone with ghost. plus we have over 500 machines, and it took a while to go through the file, and would sometimes fail. thank in advance for the replies

rob101 - Have you by any chance seen the software licence and service level agreements for it. They are well worth a look with statement such as "FrogTrade cannot guarantee that the product provided will meet your requirements, and may not be uninterrupted or error free". Worth a read. We were asked to skim over it and highlight any points worth looking at, pretty much every page of the 20 page document had at least one point that needed highlighting. But I suspect if your at the point of drawing up the designs your school has already gone with it. I just hope all goes well.

Thanks beeswax, Thats the kind of thing im hoping wont happen. Although they say its an all singing all dancing VLE, I am still a bit unsure as to how good it really is. The sales person who did the demo to our SLT, said that they were being used by BECTA as the model VLE to use to get your school to BECTA's phase 3 target of 2010. It just seems to me to be to good to be true. But if someone can prove me wrong, Please do. [-o<

Hello All, Our Head of ICT has pretty much decided to go with this choice of VLE (despite all attempts by me not too). I am trying to get some kind of feedback from other shcools IT department with their views or experiences of this VLE. They claim the usual features such as AD intergration and SIMS integration, but dont explain how...What a surprise. Anyway any feedback would be appreiciated to help me smooth the process of implementaion that is imminant. :sad1: Cheers
