  1. I'm an exam board examiner and really do appreciate all the work which goes with trying to balance network security, filtering requirements, and requests to use software like this on a school network or device. The exam boards really do need to play ball, and their responses sound very frustrating. Just to put a few things into context: none of us do this for the money. Whatever stories you may have heard, getting £3.25 per script (which can take ages to assess) and then be taxed on it, is not the best way to get rich. Exam marking usually comes at the end of a long year when we're all tired, but we do this so that we can be better prepared to teach our (and perhaps your) children, and get their passes and grades, spot on. The boards like to employ current teachers for exactly that reason, and we don't all have the money for our own devices (I have a chromebook, which is the best that I could afford). So, in all, I suppose I'm trying to say - thanks for your efforts on this. Perhaps if enough technical staff complain, the exam boards will change the software so that it's more easily accessible in future.

  5. Can I ask what the difference in terms of access/use between the key and the Radius was? Was it like a two step authentication, or more lock down on filtering? What did they object to? Or did they just object because it wasn't what it used to be?
  6. That's interesting , we're looking at Radius at the moment.
  7. Thanks for all of these replies. IrritableTech - I follow you on twitter, so I'll take another look at your blog. (@4goggas)
  8. Thanks. Will look - had always thought BYOD referred to student devices not staff, but it makes sense to look there too.
  9. Fair point! Thank you. I think its more the phones/iPads which I'm concerned about. We also have assistants who are often in on a short turn around and they aren't issued with laptops.
  10. Much appreciated! This sounds like a simple solution. I found another thread about this - once I'd posted this and the AUP seems to be important too. It was the emails on phones thing which had me worried.
  11. My apologies if this has already been posted and answered elsewhere on here. I trawled the forums and struggled to find anything. Essentially, more and more staff are wanting to use their personal devices on the school network. It stands to reason that if tablets and phones can connect to a filtered wireless connection, so could laptops. This then leads to staff being able to type in a file path to their network documents, bringing about a potential risk. Should I be less worried about IOS devices and more concerned about Android/others? What do others do about foreign devices on their networks? Has anyone set up a Sophos UTM? Perhaps we should be looking at a VDI solution? (Sounds expensive.) Also, school email access on personal phones, iPads? Seems a bit of a data protection risk if the device can't be wiped if lost, stolen or sold on? Or am I over thinking this? Sorry if all of this seems really simple. I'd appreciate responses.
  12. Hello! Is anyone using FeeMaker from Furlong for fees and billing? I'm aware that they're a part of Schoolbase as an MIS. Does anyone have any reviews of their products and support please? Its quite worrying that there doesn't appear to be any threads on this product on here. (This may well be both a good or a bad thing.) Also, is there anyone using FeeMaker with an iSAMS MIS? Cheers in advance for any comments.
  13. Is my maths really that bad that I work out 8 techs for 500 workstations? That's 1:187?
  14. We've had problems with frog and their support. But we seem to be moving forwards now...
  15. Does anyone use a standalone exam package for exam entry, results and/or EDI? We have a Filemaker Pro database and as good as it is with us being able to customise our data, we would like to find a more efficient way to work with exam data so that we can transfer data via EDI. Cheers in advance if you know of anything which could help us. Thanks!
