As of late my current job has been coming more politics then anything. I have been getting tired of it, which led to start looking else where. I had a informal interview last thrusday for a sys admin position. This morning I had a 2nd interview via phone, it was with the IT manager, HR manager, & AD guru. It was a little over an hour in length. Each person took turns in asking questions/scenarios. I received a call today after work for a 3rd interview for tomorrow morning. It is with the IT Manager and his boss. My question is, what should I expect from this interview tomorrow? I am at my wits end with my current job, I am not sure how much longer I can contiune with all the crap that has been going on.

I just got off the phone with the head sec at my HS. She stated that when she plugs her usb drive in and tries to access a file, she get's the error "xx is not formatted, would you like to format now?" The drive worked fine yesterday, but not today. Does anyone know of quick fix, just so i can copy the data off the drive. BTW it's an OLD 1gig san disk flash drive formatted in fat16.

background info: win2003 server w/ sp2. all xp workstations w/ roaming profiles. they still need access to local drive, some programs need access to program files. So I cant prevent access to. I had tried to create a path rule in software restrictions, was unsuccessful.

I am looking for a way via gpo to accomplish disabling the creation of new shortcut in the context menu when you do a file > new > folder/shortcut. Students are creating shortcuts to the local drive and installing software and games. This is has become a real pain to try and stop.

I have been searching for a way to just block the chat portion of gmail. Has anyone here been successful at blocking just the gmail chat??

I am trying to update all my workstations to SP3 of corel wordperfect 12. I would like to deploy the service pack through gpo to all the workstations. The issue however is that the sp is in an .msp format instead of .msi and it will not allow me to. Does anyone know of way to do accomplish this? I do not want to install this manually on each machine.

To each their own. I do not like sysprep as I find it requires too many unnecessary steps. All my images are sealed with using newsid. It is so much faster.

I recently did this, and yes you need to specify for each level U:\*.exe U:\*\*.exe U:\*\*\*.exe etc., for as many sub folders as you wish, I only went 5 sub folders deep, I figured most kids would give up after that. This was the only way I know of.

The details are pretty sketchy. From what I have been told, The one kid somehow got admin level rights, then gave his friend the same level of rights, and away they went. We just went to 2003 server roughly last year. The cops were call yesterday, so they're being charged, but thats about all the info I know. As of right now, all the techs are being left in the dark about this whole situtation. I dont even think that many techs know about this. I only know because the principal here is friends with the principal at the school that it happened. So only know of what he has told me.

One of our highschools were hacked. 2 kids finally found a way around our network. apperantly, the had full access to the ENTIRE domain, had a few virsus ready. The school tech caught them, but not sure how much damage was done before they were caught. Now I have the luxury of the principal at my school asking me to try to figure out how they got access to our entire domain. I dont even know where to start.

I noticed that some software was depolyed through gpo recently to my HS, without my knowledge. It had come from upper magnement. Now I am forced from complaining teachers that there are shortcuts on the desktop that do not need to be there. My question is. Is there a script that can be run on login or logoff, to delete only these certain shortcuts from the all user folder??? Thanks

Oh how I HATE!!! this program I am now starting to have issues with WP12, it started out with affecting only 1 user but now it has spread to 3 different users that I am aware of. When this student tries to lanuch wp12 they receive the error message " cannont initialize templates. The most likey reason is an invalid template path" This only happens to this user, anyone else can log onto that computer and run wp12 without problems. I have tried everything that I can think of. I have deleted the application data folder for that user, tried making the user an administrator. Repaired the user account. Not quite sure of what else to do. Anyone else come across this problem before??? I am starting to some teachers breathing down my neck, because this student can not do his work.

Does it ever end?? I was successfully able to block students from running .exe files from their flash drive *thanks to this site* but now, I am having students complaing that their U3 flash drive doesnt work. When they try to access the drive it does not work due to the "software restriction policies" This only happens to students that have U3 flash drive's, everyone else with a normal flash drive, do not notice any issues. Is there a way to disable U3 from running on these drives I hope this makes sense.

Is there a way to convert a ip address to a computer name? I have a few students that are browsing porn through google images. I only have the ip address that was accessing the website, not the computer name, is there a way to do this, so I can find out what student this is.

Thanks for all the help guys... I have finally got this setup and working as it should... Although I have noticed one issue that I cant figure out how to fix, I have googled it but no luck in finding any soultions. heres the issue Currently when a student tries to run an .exe file from the root of his/her usb drive it comes up with an error *good sign* but if they open a sub folder they can run .exe files without any issues *bad sign*. How do I deny all sub folders from running .exe files, just like what was done to the root??? Is this possible?

Forgive Me I have done several searches going on for the last hour, and I have not been able to find a definite answer, maybe I have, and I just missed it. I am at work also, so I have been getting interuptted with quick issues/questions. Anyways back to the question at hand. I would like this to be done through GP, if possible. Have a drive associated with a usb key. So everytime billy plugs his usb key in, it is always going to be a T: drive mapping. Secondly, I would like to block ALL exe files from being run from that drive letter. Can someone please help I have searchad, and searched and searched some more, for answers and was unscuccessful :oops:

I have been using the test image for a few days now, but it wont really be put through the grinder, untill i have the little *angels* using the computer in the classroom. I converted using this command in dos: CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS

Thanks for the quick replies. I am just reading up on shadow copies now to gather some info quick question, can i set shadow copies for a shared folder on the drive or does it have to be the entire drive???

I know, I know. I hate the thought of this being the year 2007 and still using FAT32!!!! I have created an test image under NTFS file format. I am planning on impleting it tomorrow in a classroom enviroment. I am curious as to if anyone has run in MAJOR issues when going from fat32 to ntfs, be it software wise, or even security wise. I have asked the other techs that are around my area and no one has even bothered to try ntfs, so I am getting little to no support there. I would like any and all input, be it good or bad.
