This is where dedupe is supposed to really help. Uncompressable data (videos, isos, etc) that have very little difference between them. This will get you considerably more space savings in this scenario over compression.

I'll double check the timezones, but I'm pretty sure that's good. I've also tried 3 different 'admin' level accounts, no love. I can join Linux machines to the domain, just not Solaris thus far.

I dropped LMCL to 2. According to the system I am up to date.(I think?) Can you even patch a simulator?

Hey guys, I'm trying to run the simulator in VirtualBox. I've got the network up and I'm trying to set up Active Directory. When I enter my domain and admin credentials it tells me: "The attempt to join the Active Directory domain failed either because the clocks of the appliance and the domain controller are skewed or the administrative user does not have the appropriate permissions to create a computer account in Active Directory." The time is within seconds of the DC (they both sync off ntp.gov) and the admin permissions I'm using work on everything else I've ever used to join to the domain (including a linux based NAS). Any suggestions?

What does the OS run off on the 7110? Flash? A disk in the array? The specs show 14x146 or 14x300, but there's 16 drive bays. I guess two of those are for the mirrored OS?

It also provides some other network shares I forgot to mention, but it's still of no consequence I don't think. Now to find a reputable reseller

Well my OP doesn't even put tape in the equation, it wasn't until someone brought up some stuff I hadn't considered. So, I do not rightfully know.

CIFS shares are just word/excel. My SBS 2008 VM does Exchange (for those same 30 users) and currently has my CIFS shares on it. It also does Sharepoint and WSUS. The second VM is Server 2008 with our SQL Business database on it. This is the VM I probably care more about, and the only role this VM has is to serve up our data.

What happens under high IO? We're a small shop (30 employees). I doubt we'd tax the thing that hard. Thanks for your lightning fast help.

Alright cool. So, what I'm trying to do (above) should be reasonably feasible? Am I checking for NDMP compatibility with the backup software or the superloader itself? I think Quantum uses Backup Exec Quickstart?

Right now it's just 1 VM server (2 guests inside it). How is NFS faster than iSCSI? Is that something unique to the 7xxx series from Sun? I'll check on NDMP capabilities on the Quantum Superloaders.

I apologize for being late to the game here. I'm interested in a 7110 for our company SAN. I'd like to use it for iSCSI storage for my VMWare VM's as well as CIFS shares. To top it off, I'd like to be able to back up the whole SAN to something like a Quantum Superloader (Something like D2D2T). Is this possible with the 7110? What other additional hardware considerations would I need to visit? We have about 1TB of data right now, so I'd like room to grow. I'd imagine we have a backup window of something like 8-9 hours to run the tape and with the "small" amount of data we are storing now I can get that done in that window, right? If I wanted to back up the SAN to tape, would I need an external SAS/SCSI card for the 7110 to hook it to the SuperLoader?

Yeah that's part of the problem, since my servers are virtualized even if I put in a SAS/SCSI controller none of the guests would have direct access to and ESXi 4 doesn't allow for services to be installed. Our backups wouldn't take more than a night (I don't imagine).. so I don't have a problem backing up directly off the SAN if possible.

Ok, hrm that puts a twist on things. If I wanted to do D2D2T and had a superloader 3... I can't just go Server -> SAN (there's my D2D) -> Tape? I guess if the SAN had an os that supported the tape agent and the SAS/SCSI protocol I could.. otherwise I need an intermediate server for this configuration?

Yeah I was looking at LTO 4 tapes Thanks for the recommendations. So, even though the SuperLoader has an interface for SAS or SCSI (not iSCSI), you don't have to use it for the backup server? I figured the LAN cable on the SuperLoader was just maybe for management and you had to pull all the data down to the device via SAS or SCSI connectivity. (Though that might be ideal since it would be faster than using Gigabit ethernet.

How does your tape drive hook up to the network/server? I see some are SAS, some are SCSI. Do you hook the external SAS/SCSI to a server or the SAN? If it's the server that could prove problematic as I'm running VMWare ESXi and the guests don't have direct access to host hardware. If you hook it to the SAN, I'm assuming you need to use a SAN compatible with the autoloader (I'm eyeing a Quantum Superloader 3?).

Right now, as a whole maybe 1TB. But we plan to go paperless in the next year. I realize RAID and SAN->SAN isn't a backup. I'm wanting data redundancy in case of hardware failures that put the kibosh on whole systems. It's not very LIKELY to happen but I want to have a system in place so if it should ever happen I have recourse. I think I'll read up more on D2D2T. Looks like tape archival may help alleviate some of my worries.

I am not familiar with D2D2T backup solutions (I'm guessing Tape?). I know 2 SANS is overkill, but when you put things in perspective another 15k (or whatever it is) to add storage resiliency to your network isn't bad. I mean, the things you just -CANNOT- afford to lose have to have a value on them, and a database filled with 10 years worth of client data is certainly one of them.

Maybe? I'm not sure. You start getting into 3-5k per socket when you go enterprise. I'm just looking for a way to keep my data safe. Presently our RAID6 array on my server box backs up our important (SQL DB) to a small NAS I have nightly. I'm looking to add an additional layer of hardware so that the chance of total loss is pretty much impossible in terms of hardware failure. (save a fire, flood, etc).

Hello Folks I'm currently looking to purchase two SAN's. I plan to use them for iSCSI/CIFS in conjunction with my VMWare vSphere (free) server. I'd like to move my virtual machine data to the SAN and run those over iSCSI as well as share out a slice of storage with ADS permissions over CIFS. I'd also like to be able to have the SANs provide failover, if one should fail the other picks up. (This requires some multipathing, I assume? I'm not privy to that just yet). The second SAN, all I want it to do is replicate the data of the first SAN (ideally in real time). We're a small business, so unfortunately that means small budget. I got a quote from Dell for two EQL 4000's (totaling something like $42,000). That's probably twice what we'd like to spend. I've also priced out some "White box" SAN's running NexentaCore (Solaris Kernel with Ubuntu userland). By the time I add the blocklevel duplication plugin I start getting into Sun 7110 pricing. Would a Sun Storage 7110 allow me to do this? Those are (surprisingly) even more reasonably priced than the EQL SANs' from Dell. I look forward to hearing from you!
