We have a MySQL instance setup on a server that we then allow students to create databases on. Have just installed each particular student as a user who only has control of one database ( same as their username ). They can then add table / run SQL etc.... We also use PhpMyAdmin, again installed on server, to allow the students to control their database but I am currently looking at some of the GUI tools and might install these onto student desktops. We alter the login block code so that when a user visits the frontpage of Moodle it logs them in automatically using NTLM. ( no need to actually visit the login page itself ) Could pass the code on if you are interested...

Having a read of the BECTA guidelines for data encryption as we are looking at moving towards a solution at our school. Looking for guidance or recommendations as to products that people are using for encrypting data ( on laptops / servers / back-up tapes etc and USB sticks ) - also how do you manage this / train staff ? The guidelines also mention using secure file deletion for files that contain personal data - similar question - what do you use ? how do you train staff ?? Any users of TrueCrypt for encryption or Eraser for file deletion ? (seeing they are open source ) Thanks
