Hi, I get the error message below when I try to rename a domain as described here: http://thelazyadmin.com/index.php?/archives/446-Domain-Rename-Part-1-Setup.html When I do: rendom /list It returns: Failed to Bind to Ldap session on myserver.mydomain. Cannot connect and bind to the Domain Naming FSMO. Cannot Continue.: Win32 Error 58 :58 Thanks a bunch if someone have a solution for this /johanny
  3. Would that be robocopy from \\servername\home$ to \\newservername\home$..? Or does it exist a more elegant and bulletproof solution? They are on a separate share named \\servername\profile$ I plan to create a similar share on the new server, but which options do I have to push them over so that they will be accessable by the users..?   4. This particular w2003 50 users dc box does dhcp, dns, some printing and home folders. On the new hardware we have installed w2003r2 std server. I want to move most of the old user stuff over with as least hassle as possible. If possible I want the new hardware to take over the old server's IP address. Is this practically possible, and if yes, when in the process should I make the change on the old server's IP? To transfer AD, do we set up the new hardware to be a secondary DC? Will all computer and user accounts, OUs etc be correctly replicated then? For the home folders, is robocopy the best solution..? What about the user profiles? Does it exist an automated way to push these over..? If we succeed in most of the above, will the users only need to select the new domain name from the drop-down list when logging in, do will there be more work to do locally at their machines..? Anyhow, thanks for urls or hints on these operation too ;-) /johnny
  5. Thanks Geoff, I have skimmed through the accompanying documents and it covers about all conceivable combination of forests, trust relationships and complex dns zone scenarios. We have just one server and one domain and it wasn't easy to figure out what in those 82 pages that was applicable to my situation. Does it exist any good '3rd party' how-to or white paper for a simple single-server single-domain rename..? I'd also ask for the same concerning moving services and files from w2003 server to new hardware. Does any of you know about good 'practical' how-tos for this too..? Thanks anyway ;-) /johnny
  6. Hi, We have a w2003 dc / dhcp / dns with around 50 users with a single label domain name. I want to change the domain name to a dotted one to avoid caring about the special requirements for non-dotted domains. Also we need to move this server (and users) to new hardware. How do I do this with the least hassle? In which order..? Thanks a lot for urls, hints and comments... /johanny

  8. Thanks Geoff, So a properly configured L3 switch using VLANs is the only way to go...? You mention BSC, but if this in your opinion isn't sufficient either, I'll go for a L3 solution. Does the L3 solution only require a L3 main distribution switch (to each of the non-administered classroom switches) or do we need to replace all the classroom switches to support VLANs too..? Does anyone here have any links to example config for such a scenario using a not too expensive L3 switch? (iow not with a top-of-the-line Cisco box) regards Johnny
  9. Hi again, To test this I got hold of a D-Link DGS-1216T managed gigabit switch which actually has STP built in. The STP was disabled by default, however when I enabled it, the config utility suggested the following default values: Bridge priority: 0-64k: 32768 Bridge max age 6-40: 20 Bridge hello time 1-10: 2 Bridge forward delay 4-30: 15 In addition each port has the following default settings (haven't touched these either): Path Cost: 10 Priority: 128 However with these default settings a loop link between two ports at one of the (unmanaged) classroom switches connected to this DGS1216T still gives me looping traffic clogging up my whole network. Can I alter the DGS1216T's STP settings to isolate the problem to not spread to other ports on this switch, OR won't this STP protection work when the loop is actually between ports at an unmanaged switch with its uplink port connected to the DGS1216T box with STP enabled...?   10. Hi, I consider setting up ubuntu 'terminal' servers and have our 250 students dual-boot up to some kind of linux thin client software with their private notebooks. The client should be able to run the openoffice apps and a web browser sufficient compatible with IE with regards of features and display. Furthermore the teacher should be able to check that all students in his classroom actually run the client software and not use their notebook's xp to do 'other tasks'... Having said this, what options do I have? What are you guys using in similar scenarios? Does it exist a reliable dual-boot option to let the students use their xp os at home but be forced to use the client at school? Also have any of you used *nux terminal servers? How many students should we count per server? I want (if possible) to get rid of M$ and licence fees for the students (have enough with all the employees etc ;-) Thanks for comments and suggestions regards johnny
  11. Thanks Chris, I see that DLink and Linksys also have managed switches with the feature you mention. Would these 'budget' boxes also be an alternative or should we buy the RR right from the beginning?? How do I configure the spanning tree stuff, is it purely a config on-off switch switch-wide..? As of the classroom switches they are already purchased so we'll have to live with them for some years. However it's easy to find out from the simultaneous blinking from switch LEDs at the classroom switch and check just the cables in that room. regards johnny
  12. Hi, We have unmanaged switches with gigabit uplink ports in our classrooms. The uplink ports from the classrooms are connected to a plain gigabit switch again connected to the servers. Now and then the pupils amuse themselves by interconnecting two wall network jacks together with a cable. This initiates a looping effect which almost chokes all network traffic. A good managed gigabit switch will probably have features which stop such unwanted 'loop' traffic spreading across its ports. In that case the problem wil only occur in the affected classroom. Which 'feature' do I look for with managed switches to avoid having problems with such looping effects? Does it also exist more advanced switches which can send error messages to an administrator when such a loop problem is detected? Thanks for comments and help on this issue regards johanny
