I have just finished pushing our new Windows 11 image to all staff laptops. Sounds great, but.... I have discovered many staff reporting that when they try to use the webcam (or visualiser) via the built-in Camera app, the display is just black. If a still photo is taken whilst the camera display is black, then it works and is saved successfully. It only seems to be the live video feed that is not working. Has anyone else happened across this before? I hope so, don't fancy reimaging everything...

I have been tasked with spec'ing up a new computer set up for our Music Department. We have ageing PCs in their classroom at the moment, with a USB sound card/mixer and USB MIDI keyboards. These are used by Cubase and Sibelius which is installed onto each PC. We have a piece of software installed onto the PCs which resets all settings back to a preset default upon a restart to stop the students from messing up the config. This setup has always been a bit unreliable and cumbersome and I am sure there must be a better way of getting them working. If you have a really good set up for your Music Department, I'd love to hear what you have done and would really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Yes, that was what I had missed. It is mainly working now, but we are often getting a Database Error message now. An 'iisreset' fixes this for a while until it returns again. Any ideas on this at all @imullings? Mark.

I have installed Devizes bookings onto a server 2008 R2 DC and spent ages inputting all of our block bookings. It allowed me to do this without issue. However, when staff try to make their own bookings they get an Error 500 - Internal Server Error. I can still make further bookings as Admin and on behalf of staff.... Can anyone help me with this, I would really appreciate it!? Mark.

Hello, I am in the process of setting up a new RDS farm on Server 2012 R2. Is it possible to set up Web SSO for users from external computers? If so, can anyone point me in the right direction? Currently, users have to login to the initial form-based login, then login again when launching an application from the menu. I have found guides to achieve SSO from domain-joined computers, but not external ones. Any ideas very gratefully received. Mark.

From memory, the csv just needs to be a list of e-mail addresses of the users you want to convert. I think I just exported this from the list of users in Exchange.

I edited the code of one of the scripts to pull the email address with our domain as the default rather than the @online.microsoft.com address. I think it would have worked anyway, but just for neatness.... Mark.

I have just been through this exact process. I found loads of conflicting reports of what would happen, but ultimately it wont let you uninstall while there are still active mailboxes anyway. Deleting a mailbox did clear the attributes in my case, so I converted all to mail users first (all attribs were left in place by doing this) and then proceeded to uninstall successfully. If you need any more info, just let me know. I am now looking to re-install a basic Exchange server so that I can continue to make new mail users in future (see my thread of confusion just above this one!) Mark.

Hello, I have recently completed a migration to Office365 from our on-premises Exchange environment. In order to remove the mailboxes from our internal servers, I had to uninstall our Exchange 2010 server. This completed successfully. Now however, I need to get a very basic Exchange server installed onto our internal network again in order to manage and create mail objects that are to be used in Office365 (we DirSync our AD you see). When I attempt to install Exchange again, it asks me to provide an organization name and then setup says it is going to prepare AD ready for an Exchange install (which has already done due to our previous setup prior to Office365 migration) and I am worried this will overwrite settings already in AD. Will it? Has anyone been through this process at all? Thanks a lot for any help. Mark.

Hello, I am in the process of migrating our on-prem Exchange 2010 setup to O365. So far, I have: Created and successfully completed a cutover migration batch Installed and successfully configured DirSync with passwords Tested accounts to make sure I can login with on-premise AD credentials Monitor incremental sync, which is running fine each day Next week, my intention is to: Make required DNS changes to change mail delivery to O365 Monitor this until I am happy it is working Delete migration batch Uninstall Exchange from our on-prem server and enable me to re-use the server elsewhere It is the last point regarding removing our on-prem Exchange server which is causing me headaches. I thought it would be straight-forward, but I have now read lots of conflicting articles about what the impacts of removing this could be. I am using Exchange 2010, the DirSync is running from Server 2012 R2. Has anyone else been through this process with a cutover migration? Microsoft say removing the Exchange server should be fine, but others say that this will remove Exchange attributes from the on-prem AD which will then sync to O365 effectively disabling the users mailbox. Can anyone help to stop my head spinning?

Thanks, the password did match, problem solved. Might well hide the servers now too; I assume it doesn't stop access to shares in any way if you happen to know the path?

Actually, the local administrator password on the domain joined servers may well be the same. I'll test this now....

Hello, I have discovered an issue where about 50% of our servers allow browsing to the root drive admin shares (\\server\c$ for example) from other non-domain servers plugged into the LAN, without asking for login details. When trying this from a non-server OS, I am prompted for login first. Can anyone shed any light as to why this happens? It is a little concerning...

Thanks for checking, I suppose that would make some sense. Think I'll try a dcpromo and see if it complains - I guess it would just not carry out the dcpromo if the schema isn't as it needs.

Well, on the current 2003 R2 PDC, in that reg key we have: Schema Version = 47 System Schema Version = 31 ????

So as our schema is already version 47, we could just run dcpromo on the 2008 server without running adprep first? .....or will running adprep add extra features needed for server 2008 DC's over Exchange 2010??

I am due to upgrade our system from server 2003 to 2008 tomorrow. We have been running with two 2003 DC's now for many years, but as we are looking to move to Windows 7 workstations, we are belatedly making to jump. I understand that before we can join a 2008 DC we need to update the schema, but this is where my worries lie. About a year ago we were lucky enough to have an Exchange 2010 server installed for us, and when querying the current 2003 DC for the schema version, it shows version 47 (the 2008 R2 version I think). I assume this has been upgraded as part of the Exchange install. With this in mind, do you think I can just dcpromo the 2008 server and job done, or do I need to update the schema again first?

This is starting to drive me mad now! In a nutshell, when attempting to search for anything in our Sharepoint site, search returns no results at all. Our portal is secured with https and forms-based authentication; I gather this is a problem to the search routine, so I have followed the instructions on this page, I believe to the letter: How to crawl Smart Card or Forms Based (FBA) Enabled Web Applications Although the crawl completes successfully (thousands of results found apparently), these are not shown to the end user doing to search. Each search that is made is logged in the SSP pages, so it seems to be talking ok. Very strange, anyone else had this issue please? Mark.
