I recently had two interviews both for a Director of Digital Strategy. The Schools weren't sure whether they wanted a teacher or not and I think, not being a teacher was a disadvantage to me. I don't think many schools really know what strategy really means. It is about positioning and aligning IT with the schools business goals (teaching and learning and administration). It is not about installing technology and then trying to find a reason for using it, which I feel is happening.

I am going to be re-doing my technical qualifications as most schools want someone who can do both.

I have been a Director of ICT for 6 years in an Independent School. I was previously an IT manager at a state school for 8 years. The jobs are similar but I am more strategic now and less technical.

There are two spaces available for a 2 day (18th -19th February 2013, 8.30am to 5.00pm) Win 2008 R2 server admin course with some added Windows 2012. The venue is at Warwick School, Warwick. I believe there are no age limits on apprenticeships, the criteria is for the person not to have a level 4 qualification or higher (HNC, Degree etc). There are then different salary structures for the specific age group. The Apprentice will be given on the job NVQ level 3 training and there will be a possibility to do a Cisco CCNA at Warwickshire college.

They may have an GCSE or A level in IT. We took on an 18 year old apprentice last year who already had an NVQ level 3 in ICT and Microsoft training.

I agree about having experience, you would have to take everything in to account and take everyone on their own merit. Having qualifications, experience and being a hard worker would make a very good candidate. I have met many people on courses that have tried to bimble along and have failed miserably. I would say that both my degrees have been very beneficial in terms of knowledge of how and why we do things (probably in a in a perfect world though) where as my experience has shown me how things are done in reality. I think that they do compliment each other. I do think though, that I wouldn't have been considered for the job I have at the moment without the degree and also for the job I am about to go for.

I can only offer you my opinion based on 25 years of working experience and as someone who recruits staff in the education sector on a regular basis. I suppose it comes down to an individual's ambition of how far they want to go with their career. Again, based on my own experience, I would suggest that a degree helps in terms of salary and quality of school.

Although a degree is not the be all and end all, it shows a certain level of competency and is advantageous when applying for jobs. I spent 12 years part time doing a BTEC ONC, BTEC HNC, BSc and MSc as well as Microsoft qualifications. It definately opens doors and allows you to negotiate higher wages.
