Dear All Sorry to impose, I am a teacher but a few years ago, as a HoD ICT persuaded my school to change it's VLE to Moodle. Unfortuanately, I left the school soon after and would now like to update my skills. This will be an extra curricular project So, I would like to create my own moodle - several Maths and ICT courses. I want to publish it for a small number of people and was wondering what the best way forward would be? A small fee to a moodle hoster is what I am hoping for. Thank you

CAN I REPORT THIS POSTER? If not, I will case to post here. I did not realise that I would get foul mouthed because I was a Head of ICT - "obsurd and gets right on my t!ts" It is quite obvious to me that Oops does not have anything relevant to say about my situation - in this post or the previous one. I also think he gives his profssion a bad name. Thanks to all others for your support. Somebody hit the nail on the head - students will not pass their exam because of this. As for me, I will spend another week in school during the holiday trying to process the coursework. Before Oops makes a comment about teachers having too many holidays can I just add that I am one of the many teachers who spends at least half of all holidays working. I also work late in the evening and for a good 8 hours at the weekend. I run extra curricular clubs in sport and ICT voluntarily. Thanks Sorry if I have offended anyone - was not my intention.

The middleware company - the largest supplier to the UK education market I believe - have finally got the network up and running with the new High Spec servers. There is talk of compensation etc. From what I can glean, and I have yet to be fully briefed, there was a problem with the power supply that corrupted the AD which was replicated and destroyed the server hard drives - multiple times. I can not tell you how amazed I am. These two servers were installed last May and for our whole system (even the old servers) to go down at such a critical time after several warnings points to a very poor service from this company. Some students will fail their exams because of this. I will make a serious complaint against this company but will also no longer defend them against detractors. Thank you all for your help.

whole domain is botched - what does that mean in laymans terms?

Thanks to all and especially Tony who has just helped me understand some key issues. The supplier of the original server is currently on site and installing a Higher Spec server - this will cut out one side of the triangle. I presume things might be up and running tomorrow? As somebody said earlier, an important next step is to explain to the staff what has happened. 4 servers going down at once seems to be improbable in the extreme? I will take advice as suggested and report back to you. Many thanks

I do not believe the servers start but will ask. I will ask the NM if he can log onto the Servers Can you explain the ping bit! We do not seem to have a redundant spare server which is what I would have expected. Both new servers have gone and the two old ones but it does seem that they have been able to get SIMs up and running. I would have thought the supplier could just bring in a new server and replicate what we have - but is that naive of me??

Thanks for the replies and it is giving me an interesting insight but why am I not getting this from the triangle of supplier/installer/Local tech team?? there is no way that I am going to be able to tell the NM his job, so imparting this info to him is not going to happen for that reason. I guess what I am angling at is how do I 1) get the triangle to realise the impact on T&L and make them aware of our anger as the SLT do not seem to be doing this 2) get the Tech team and SLT to regularly update the staff/students in a useful way 3) Get advice to a similar detail that you are giving here to the ICT teachers/SLT - not happening. 4) make the SLT not expect the NM to come into work at 08:30 after leaving work at 03:00 and understand the H&S issues 5) Ultimately, get the triangle to admit the mistakes with a view to reporting on what has happened so that there is not suspicion Thanks

Tony, I have been trying to get the third party and supplier in to fix the probs since the servers were installed last April. IMHO, there has not been enough motivation/cooperation from the triangle of vested interests (the installation team, the supplier and our tech team) to get the work done - each blaming the others bad workmanship. Personally I think they will cover each others back and the carnage wreaked for T&L will not be documented. I feel sorry for our NM as he has been understaffed.

Sorry HoD ICT so will have a limited technical knowledge. The printers went down and then the servers. Problems with backup drives which were destructed and replaced then problems with RAID controllers which were replaced. But servers then failed completely so were taken away and rebuilt. Brought back in but problems persist, ie, no work stations connect to the servers. Email is down and internet is only functioning eratically. The clients can be used as stand alone but printers have to be connected as stand alones etc. PDFs will not open even when computers used as stand alones meaning that we cannot access digital exam papers for revision. So, basically, the users cannot log on to their user area. there is a clean backup - apparently!!

1) Well known Network Supplier to the School Sector 2) New servers bought last year. 3) Servers installed by third party 4) Network re-built by in-house technical team 5) All servers have now failed and students do not have access to their user areas. 6) GCE and some GCSE coursework deadlines have not been met. 7) Network still not up after 2 weeks. 8) NM under stress and coming into work in early hours of morning. 9) SLT not keeping staff informed. What to do?

Read your thrad and post and all of the links and more so tried to sell the TC idea to SLT. They had a consultant in today and he insisted that TC Ntworks were uneconomical. Clients were similar price ot a PC and the servers were not that good!! Apparently, leasing is the way to go! Comments please!

Dear All Our LEA is supplying all schools, who want to buy into it, a Sharepoint portal with OWA. The problem is that when our students log on there are all sorts of problems with the web pages freezing, cookie errors, attachments not opening etc. In fact, it is virtually unuseable. The tech team from the LEA came in and witnessed the problems, plugged their laptop into our network and concluded that their laptop was ok so it was a local problem that needed to be trouble-shooted by our tech team. Can anybody please suggest how I best get the on site Tech team to systematically check these problems? At present, people are voting with their feet and not using the system, yet we would like to use OWA in our teaching. Thanks P

We have several problems with the performance of our network. I have been informed today that a company sponsored by the SSAT are coming in to do an ICT health check. Does anybody have experience of this company? Thanks

Hello all I find your solution to be slightly beyond my understanding technically but will read up on it! I also feel that I can now go to the ISP and ask them why they have not done this - as I am sure that the NM will have done this. However, why does the NM want to keep referring simple probs like this to his VPN solution - which is not complete yet? Surely Moodle needs to be accessed via the website for all to see? Solving this problem would be a huge step forward. Moodle has been sitting on the server, populated since Early September. Thank you

Hello All We have a CC3 network so can Easylink in to our network. We have Moodle from school which is sitting nicely on a Linux Server. However, we cannot link to Moodle from home, which would be one of the major reasons for having it. Preferably, how do I get info to give to the NM so that he can point the Moodle server to the Web Sever so that we can see Moodle from home via our website? Alaternatively, can we use Easylink to do link to Moodle? Otherwise, is it sensible, after having got someone to bulid the linux server, to go to a hosted service afterall? Surely a lot of the functionality/performance is lost when hosting? Thank you

Hello John We have Widows XP. Is it because the page has to be uploaded to the network first? If so, I would really like to know how to do this. Thanks
-
Thanks for the reply John, yes, I right click in the form but the database option is grayed out. Thanks

Hello all I have been creating an online questionnaire in MS Front page. When the form is inserted there appears a submit button and a reset button. I want the information that has been written on the form to be automatically written to a database when the submit button is pressed. This option is grayed out when you right click on the submit button. In other words, I want it to not be grayed out. I asked the Tech team and they came back with "it was not grayed out" when they tried it. Presumaby then, there is some extension that needs to be set for all student/teacher users? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
