I did attempt to get 2simple's suite running on WINE a long while back (2 years ago). They gave me a temporary license whilst I investigated it (probably why their site says untested by them). I could get it to work in WINE with a lot of work (needs .net and many other DLLS 'acquired' from a windows box - this in turn creates a load of licensing issues), but a couple of the functions would cause it to crash (not good telling a teacher don't press this button!). Purplemash (by 2simple) was one alternative as it runs completely in a browser and they did offer some SWF files of some of there original software. Wish I could be the bearer of better news, but from what I found it took a lot of work for little gain.

The module has now been updated, providing a location in itadminshare to upload isos to. They are then accessible from the web management for the distribution module.

Just got give an update on this. We are creating in the next day a new way of handling isos for this part of the system, as http seems to be a bit temperamental. What we are doing is creating an area within the itadmin samba share. Files can be place here via samba, scp etc. and then from the web management you will be able to see all the available isos from a dropdown menu within the distribution module. Selecting an ISO will prepare it for deployment. The nice thing about doing it this way will allow us later on to extend functionality to multiple cd images. So you will be able to deploy systems with different software setups (windows & linux) to different computers rather than being restricted to using one image only. Our eta for the new share and dropdown method is about 1 to 2 days to get it coded and tested.

Thanks tosh. This error does sound pretty familiar so we are planning to test it tomorrow with the linux client distro. If it is the problem we are thinking (http maxing out how much data we can send nicely) then we will create a patch to fix this problem. Probably something using ftp.

Hi tosh61, couple of questions so I can try replicating the problem What ISO are you trying to upload? Is it the karoshi client ISO itself? Are you also accessing the uploader in the web management from the server or a remote machine on the same network. Also does the error appear immediately or after a while. I seem to recall a problem with a "the connection reset" message being displayed if a large iso is trying to be uploaded (above 700MB) but this takes a while to appear. If this is the case then I will contact one of the developers and work out how we resolved this bug when we were developing the module.

All the one's mentioned above have Raid support. Ubuntu, Centos, Debian etc do it through mdadm usually. FreeNas also has raid functionality built in (and do-able graphically through a web interface I might add!). The linux ones as well can also do your torrents & news feeds. I personally have a tiny ARM computer running Debian and it uses a combination of sickbeard, sabnzbd+, transmission to handle all my automatic downloading needs at night. You may find between the different distros it varies in complexity to install the services you require. I know ubuntu & debian have them (sabnzbd & transmission) available in the repository. I am not so sure about the redhat (and its derivitives such as centos), perhaps one of the others can shed light on this? I think FreeNas 7 has a torrent plugin from memory.

I would go with Debian on your Nas if you want the option to install a gui (if your not confident with the commandline of Ubuntu Server) and the ability to install a lot of extra packages as and when (webserver, dlna etc). If you are looking for a ready to go Nas solution freenas is one of the best (and has a lot of extras) and openfile if your looking for just storage sharing. Hackintoshs are alright, but can be a real pain to build and maintain (something you don't want on a setup and leave it server)

The intel atom is based on the x86 family so you should find most linux distributions will work on the hardware. I recommend one tailored to that style of screen so a variant like JoliOS (based on ubuntu), Meego (Experimental but neat looking! though development from Intel may of just halted), Ubuntu 11.04+ (as it inherited the netbook interface i.e unity) or try out Hexxehs ChromeOS (should work on the hardware if you want completely cloudly).

Does your samba user and windows user have the same password used for both? As Windows will pass these credentials to the samba server and if they do not match you will encounter this problem. Are you referring to a single source for username and passwords (to keep all services using the same user credentials etc) in which case Samba + LDAP on the linux PDC or connect Linux to Active Directory if your primary domain controller is AD. For single sign on authorisation wise something like NTLM, CAS etc. is probably best bets.

Check out preseeding. We use this a lot in the distribution module in Karoshi to automate the deployment of our ubuntu desktops across the school (defining partitions, software, users etc). https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/i386/preseed-using.html gives some info. There are quite a few driver issues related to Linux VM's on HyperV and visa versa. Microsoft have been contributing a lot of code to 3.0 which seems to be along these lines of improvement.
