So the de-dupe stuff is under NDA at the moment as it's 2009.Q4 build which is due by the end of the year at the latest. That means I cannot post any details on here (do I hear a panto "boo! Hiss"?) More than happy to chat face to face or webex for those that have NDAs in place. Cheers, Phil

Just turned on de-dup at a share level on one of my multiple zpools.... you can set it at the project level and turn on/off at a share level... clevva or wot? Phil

Evening all. just to keep you all informed on the latest developments here at Sun Open Storage... I have updated my VB simulator to the pre-release 2009.Q4 build and have just been messing around with it. I know you'll badger me senseless on this but it is a great leap forward from the previous versions. Can't say too much on here but when it comes you're gonna love it! Struggling to see the downside of this one... Not sure how Sun Marketing could handle the prospect of first one vehicle, then two, then three as we gathered more and more people for the "S7000 Roadmap pub crawl" around the finer drinking establishments (definitely NOT Wetherspoons!) in the UK...

hi there Edugeekers (can I call you that or is it very disparaging?) At long last we have the 2009.Q3 roadmap (arrived about an hour ago) which shows where the S7000 is going in terms of features, functionality, platform and application support. I'm sure you'll all be chomping at the bit to find out more and I'll be more than happy to share the roadmap with you.... However, and here's the tricky bit, I will need a signed NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) for each person that wants / needs to see it and I cannot email it out so it's a face-to-face thing. Not sure how I'll manage to get round you all so with the changes here at Sun I do have some very learned colleagues across the UK who can, with a bit of cajoling (and the offer of a school dinner) can help you. If there are a few of you close (geographically) then maybe something could be done at one of your schools / educational establishments where the presentation is to a group... I'd provide the biscuits for such a thing if you need tempting. Anyway, please let me know on here via message or posting what you'd like to do. This might slip though so please bear with us just in case we make a final tweak to the code before releasing it.

Morning all, Just a quick note to let you know that we now have some new S7410 models in the line up. These new models cunningly called the "TB7410" as opposed to the "TA7410" incorporate the new 6 core 2.6Ghz processors! These new ones should therefore be even faster than the old ones. I know most of you haven't bought the S7410 (apart from Chris) and are very happy users of the S7110/7210/7310 but there are more developments for those models too in the future - watch this space. Hello again, Another posting so soon... whats going on I hear you ask? Well maybe not.... Anyway, Today I'm going to tgalk about migration off the legacy Windows servers you have onto the nice new S7000's that are popping up all over the place and I am indebted to John at Settle College for this one (beers (or coffee) at least when we meet). John told me about a basic migration tool he found on the Microsoft Technet website called "Richcopy". It allowed him to migrate data off his old Windows boxes quickly and easily on to his nice new S7110 4TB. He did say that some of the extremely long file names that students had given certain documents (i.e. jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj.doc) were not picked up but it did give him an error report so he could look at those individual files. I've tried it here on my laptop to copy across some data onto my backup drive (yes I am a diligent little soldier and backup my data on a very regular basis - must be the StorageTek in me coming out). Lol. i'm sure you're plenty strong enough to lift a 7210.... they only weight about 80KG (full). don't forget to take out the drives before you lift it. If you have an SSD then that goes in slot 3

It's not random actually - even though it might seem that way. The first SSD (LogZilla) goes in slot #3 and the second one goes in slot #11. The S7210 expects to see them in those slots if they are installed. Just do you're aware, always install any SSDs before you configure the storage on the box. It's actually best to do it as soon as you get the box then there's nothing to worry about. If you creates your zpool (i.e. configure your storage) then if you add an SSD later you'll have to trash the zpool (sorry about that). Regards, Phil

Good reply. As with all these things stuff does get jostled in transit. Also, once you have it up and running go to the Sun website and download the latest update for the appliance. I'm not 100% sure what is shipping from factory at moment but suspect that it won't be the absolute latest. Once you've done that, register the appliance and set up your phone home. Enjoy! Hi guys, It's been a while since I posted anything up here on Edugeek so time for an update. There are a large number of S7000 users on here now which is great news and we've had some exciting developments in the Open Storage practice at Sun. Couple of new things: 1. VMWare update! The Sun 7000 series (all models) has been certified for iSCSI access with ESX 4.0 (vSphere) using 2009 Q2 software. ESX 4.0 NFS access has been completed for some time. 2. S7000 Discovery Days are coming back! Mark your diaries for the 22nd September in Camberley (Sun UK HO) and the 24th September in London (45 King William Street - near Monument Tube). I'm toying with the idea of doing one in Scotland (Linlithgow) but would need to know how many of you would attend. 3. Updates on the S7000. There has been a flurry of updates for the S7000 and I must firstly apologise if it seems like we're shipping one a week. As with all software when it is introduced there are some glitches and things that need adding in or tweaking. We've been working like mad to get as much done as we can for the major releases (2009.Q2 for example) but occassionally we just can't get them all in or something crops up after the release that needs sorting. The good thing is that updating is just as easy as ever and you can always roll back. Not sure if you know this or not but you can "miss" updates if the fix doesn't apply to you and simply go for the next big one (for example 2009.Q3 which is due out soon) and take advantage of the new wizzy features it brings. So, talking about 2009.Q3... it isn't THAT far away from being released to customers so please bear with us whilst we do the final testing and making sure it's as good as it can be. I've played with an early version and it's looking very good indeed. Without giving away any secrets (cos I'm not allowed to on here) the large educational establishments on here that require some certain "restrictions / quotas" will be very pleased indeed- Right, off for a top up of coffee.
