All, I wanted to let everyone know that the VSS HW snapshot provider for the SS7000 written by the AIE team here at Sun has just been certified by Symantec Netbackup. The SS7000 is now posted on the Symantec NBU Advanced clients HCL as a supported array for snapshot clients for use with Microsoft VSS HW snapshots. ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/NetBackup_Enterprise_Server/279042.pdf For those of you not familiar with what VSS is please refer to the following URL (How Volume Shadow Copy Service Works: Data Recovery). In a nutshell having a VSS HW provider for MS environments allows backup applications send a request to the MS backup client telling it to issue a HW snapshot request to the underlying storage array providing the client's storage. This solution has been certified and approved for use with all NBU Advanced clients and client agents. ie. msExchange, msSQLServer, DB2, SAP and of course Oracle. PLEASE NOTE: This support will be available with the next application layer update. Cheers, Phil -
none that I'm aware of. Should just be a simple upgrade process. If you can, however, backup your data before doing the upgrade (that's the old StorageTek in me coming out) has anyone else on here had "iSCSI issues" when going to 2009.Q3 ? Regards, Phil

2009.Q3 release featured this. So, any of the current releases will give you this capability. As for the new iSCSI stuff that kinda came too in 2009.Q3 - sorry :-(

Sorry to say that upgrade has to come first prior to you being able to backup the configuration. FYI, we have a leading UK based mobile phone provider to thank for the RFE on this one... Just wondering how many edugeek users run Oracle in their environments. I'm guessing that there won't be many due to the Stella Artios pricing model that Oracle attracts but it would be useful to know... Oh, and a happy new year and all that sort of thing. Regards, Phil

Will try and sort something for BETT 2010 in terms of Open Storage.... A simulator night be a good idea. Am planning to be at the show but am not tied to any one stand.. Morning fellow Edugeekers (is there such a word?) Just released last night (well 02:15 this morning) is a minor update to the current 2009.Q3 build. It's been posted on the Sun Download Centre All users are encouraged to upgrade, especially those using CIFS and shadow migration. Hi there Edugeek(ers), Just a short note this morning to make you aware of some of the new Open Storage stuff here at Sun. CPUs The S7110 now has the new 6-core processors which replace the original 4-core processors. The good news is that there is no price difference The S7310 also has the new 6-core processors as well and again there is no price difference. I've not seen the new performance figures for the S7310 or the S7110 but based on what we saw with the S7410 it's only going to get better. Newbies For those of you new to the S7000 or are looiking for consolidated storage for your VMs, student and staff data then here's a good starting point: Fishworks This blog gives you some good jump off points for more information and detail about the S7000 and all the good stuff. Shows We're coming to BETT2010! You'll get to see Sun at BETT 2010. Not sure how and where we'll be but rest assured we will be there. And you might even get to see me too!! Scary or what? Apart from being slightly biased (see details below) I have used Sunrays on and off for over 12 years... Not bad bits of kit and ideally suited to some areas in schools. Cheers, Phil PS combine them with an S7000 and you get a very, very cool solution.

lol... so... what can i tell you about the "OMGB" on here... not a great deal but it's gonna be awesome (as is the rest of the S7000 product line and the new wizzy features...). Ask me again after Christmas.... (am I being too much of a tease here?)

so with the simulator the easiest thing to do is start with the basic download from Sun.com or off the DVD copy (If you need a DVD then drop me a message with your address and I'll pop one in the post). Once you have configured your simulator and before you create any shares update to the latest 2009.Q3 release. this should "take". Mine did under both VMware and VirtualBox. Personally I find the simulator runs faster under VB than VMWare but that might just be me.... Cheers, Phil
