Hi everyone, The school I am working on is considering to replace the really old " analog lines " telephone system and we are looking at all different possibilities. Our school is mostly running Open Source solutions, so we are considering of using Asterisk and FreePBX. Is there anyone using it that could give me some kind of feedback? As telephoning is really important in a school, the school would like to "know" real cases where this system is in place. We are looking at other business solutions as well, but we are not that convince on paying licenses to expand the system later on or forcing us of using their specific handsets, and we would like to set up the system using our current infrastructure. Do you use ISDN lines or a SIP trunk for the external calls? A SIP Trunk seems a good solution, but we do not trust 100% our internet connection and we would like something that can still work when the internet is down. I currently have a test environment set up and anything to do with internal calls, etc looks quite easy, however I am not familiarized with the set up for external calls with different ISDN lines or multiple numbers and SIP trunks. I would really appreciate any guidelines or resources that could help me on this matter. Further more, what is your backup/DR plan on this type of systems? Do you currently have UPSs on every switch cabinet to keep the telephones working? Many thanks

Well, to be more precise. It only happens when using MS PowerPoint 2003. Using 2007 works fine. I have uninstalled MS Updates just in case, but without much luck.

Thank you for the reply. I've checked the permissions and everything seems to be fine. Even having 777 permissions on that file or/and folder fails. However, I found that using "smbstatus -u | grep filename", the file stays locked even when I close it from the client. If I kill this process, everything seems to be working again until I modify the file again and it gets locked for everyone ( including myself ). 29529 11170 DENY_NONE 0x82 WRONLY NONE "ShareFolder" "File" When using Word or even other applications like LibreOffice or OO, everything works fine. Hi, Has anyone had problems before opening Powerpoint files from windows PCs that are hosted on a Samba server? ( Centos 5.6 x86_64 , Samba version 3.5.4-0.83.el5_7.2 ) I do not have problems opening them from Linux PCs or OpenSources software like OpenOffice or LibreOffice, however, if someone opens the file from MS Powerpoint and then somebody else try to open it, they can't ( file already in use by another user ) and the last user that used it either. It looks like Powerpoint changes something on the Timestamp/owner of the file but I don't know what. If that file then is opened from OpenOffice, it can be opened but as read-only. I have tried changing some parameters on the smb.conf ( dos filetimes = yes, oplocks = yes, level2 oplocks = yes ), but everything remains the same. I can not understand it as it only happens with powerpoint files opened from MS Powerpoint. I hope it make sense. Any help would be really appreciated! Many thanks,

Thank you for your replies. I am please to know that I was not wrong and that there is people out there with a similar situation. I was thinking of doing what you've just recommended to me ( do my own routing ). But I am concerned about the firewall and filtering rules that there is currently in place. Right now they do all the web filtering for us and they manage the firewall. We have several servers that require external access. If they are currently associating an external ip to and internal ip how can I manage that myself? Will they need to change the policies to point to my firewall/NAT box? It seems to me stupid that the school is paying for a service that is not getting... Many thanks

Hi, I was just wondering how many schools have already subnet their network. I am facing the problem of running everything into one big networks ( 10.X.y.y/16 ) that by default has been given to the school. I would like to subnet the network so the servers, wireless, clients, guest wireless, etc runs on different networks and I can add security and performance into it. However I am not allowed to subnet the network as the LEA will not change their ip address in the router. My idea was to subnet the network into different networks depending on the number of hosts needs, etc. The LEA answer is to use block allocations ( they understand it as subnetting !?!), but it will not solve the problem of having a big broadcast domain and I'll never be able to use dhcp relay agent to make life easier. Should they change it if requested? Or I am missing something? Many thanks,
