This means Protex and other filtering providers must implement secure-content inspection by mid-January 2015 to continue with the same level of filtering as currently provided. URGENT: Changes to Your School's Internet Filtering URGENT: Google to withdraw nosslsearch option. E2BN were informed by Google a few weeks ago that they are planning to withdraw the nosslsearch option that Protex and other school web filtering services use in order to filter Google searches and to blank inappropriate image thumbnails in Google image search. The effect of this is to force all Google searches to be encrypted between the browser and the Google servers using https. The latest date we have from Google for the change is mid January 2015. Since we heard this we have been busy investigating the effect this would have on Protex filtering and how we can provide a solution. What to do if your Local Authority provides Protex filtering Local Authorities have already been alerted and should be contacting the schools that they support. For the record schools don't have direct contracts with E2BN for internet connectivity. Their parent Local Authority will be a member of E2BN and will make decisions on what connectivity they will take ie full internet access or just access to the E2BN core and the National Education Network. The E2BN network terminates at the Local Authority and the LEA will generally connect schools to this via a schools wide area network. Schools opting out of LEA connections have the option of connecting directly to E2BN but this will usually be prohibitively expensive with the current topology as the E2BN is a star network so all direct connections would have to be "long lined" to London. Only RBCs offer connection to the National Education Network and some resources are only freely available via this route.
