  1. Yep, to using Nix. .. Nope never, I've banned it from my life completely along with candy from Mozilla - no need to use any kind of third party web-browser ever - not when any package I could possibly want is one pkg_add command away... On top of which I used to use Linux a lot over a period of many - many - years and I've enjoyed the rides it taken me on like finding all nVidia graphics cards in one release that will remain nameless suddenly refused to work because the guy maintaining the mainline distro purged the drivers from the data-base with no thought for the hundreds of users using it. It may take you a few years but you'll eventually realise that GNU/Linux is maintained by Clowns.. Proof = https://linuxclowns.github.io/ an if you want a real OS then you need specific hardware and specific chips that you may have trouble finding at a nice reasonable price considering the way it's all going at the moment. But it is out there if you know where to look and can find a decent deal instead of paying a ridiculous sum like 8 grand. £200 quid is more my price range along with open firmware and no evil Intel ME! Linux has it's uses, but then you should always check which ones are endorsed as being actually FREE by the EFF and it's ok for Liberating you and your mom's laptop but that's where it's usefulness ends and you find yourself drawing a line in the sand when your Hardware expects to be Debugged with some SPI flasher because some massive tech firm is waging a private war on it's users at the same time as telling them that they love them! It is certainly not the case that end users need to sit there and listen to google telling them what to do, but it is certainly the case that they should listen to other Unix developers telling them what to do... Such as running this firewall setup... https://github.com/GMG-Special-Projects-Desk/GoodbyeBigFive Banning Microsoft, Apple, Google, AWS - anything with Cloud Service in it and anything remotely to do with buzz words like AI. Then they might actually get some work done, not having to click bot-net authentication scripts and having to listen to there phone ping every-time they try to use two factor authentication presented by a company who's policy is advertising driven drivel!
  2. And according to what you can read on TechRights later that will morph into WSL3 & WSL4 etc..etc.. A great learning device for Kids would have been something like the OLPC - one Laptop For Child but Microsoft Killed it off.. So much for the *we love Linux* mantra! They only love it when it includes there proprietary gumph that lets the users boot restrictive linux - instead of using doing it the other way around - Restrictive Windows in a Sandbox! On top of which you have to have a silent laugh at all those people installing *Nix based systems on machines and mobile phone with no ECC Ram ie: all non-ECC... Programmers have said it for years Linux is what happens when a load of hackers try install Unix on a PC, Unix is what happens when a load of Developers stick Unix on a Unix Box - There really is no comparison - except for the fact that a fully open firmware machine now set's back its potential customers around 8'000 in price - failing that there's always a Raspberry Pi but then your stuck with something that virtually has very little by way of storage and would require another machine to flash the medium (OS) onto the cards. A lot of the more senior programmers are all very tired with Google (Novel's) monopoly alongside with Microsoft and its a hard habit to break if the first thing you teach your child is to use a product that's going to treat them as it's product!
