JPG File Associations

Hi guys,

 

We've hit a bit of a snag with file associations and extensions, specifically the jpg/jpeg extensions. For whatever reason I can't seem to get the JPG extension to work, whereas the other extensions do seem to work. Here's the xml file I've been using:

 

 

When any of our users (staff/admin/students) double click on the file it wants to load it in the ms-paint app which has been stripped from the image anyway.

 

The file is being called from \\server-001\netlogon

I've even tried putting the file locally on the machine to see if it was share issue.

 

I know the old Windows Photo Viewer works as the .TIFF handle loads this up perfectly. It's just the jpeg/jpg extension I'm having the issues with.

 

Anyone have any ideas?

Try this..

 

 

 

It works for us. Try adding PNG to it too to see if the PNGs open in the windows photo viewer too.

Obviously I don't want it to open in ms-paint, but totally not sure why it isn't switching, yet .tiff/tif files open fine in the retro photo viewer.

Not very easily as the control panel is locked down to the hilt, even for local administrators. :/

Ah! Could you not get to a machine that has fully open local admin rights as my thoughts were this..

 

As local admin, Set windows photo viewer as the default for all image file extensions and see if that works as local admin then export the xml and use that to replace your original default list.

 

It took me a couple of attempts to get ours to work the way i wanted it.

Edit. In Windows 10, Microsoft removed most of the Photo Viewer registry settings which is why you can only double-click to open TIFF files.

Now its turn of the last method which is the most advanced method and will bring full functionality of "Windows Photo Viewer" program in Windows 10 just like Windows 7/8/8.1.

 

When you try to set "Windows Photo Viewer" as default program for image files using classic "Set Default Programs" window in Control Panel, it only shows 2 filetypes to associate with this program: TIF and TIFF. So you can't associate "Windows Photo Viewer" with other filetypes.

 

It happens because Microsoft very cleverly removed the required keys from "Windows Photo Viewer" file associations capability in Registry.

 

But we can bring the full functionality of "Windows Photo Viewer" again in Windows 10 by re-adding those keys in Registry and it'll allow us to re-associate "Windows Photo Viewer" with all image filetypes again just like previous Windows versions.

Id had presumed you had applied the reg entries to set the photo viewer for all users. There is also this link that might help too if you are building images https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/14312-restore-windows-photo-viewer-windows-10-a.html

I can now confirm that applying that registry hack made the .jpg extension work as normal now.

Sorry for late rep. I'm facing the same problem with all image exts using the very same Tiff icon (Win 10). So your Reg code will restore correct icons for each Jpeg/Png/Bmp/Tiff type, right?
