Wireless Authentication Without using any security Options.

Hi everyone,

 

The company I work for has a dedicated DSL line just for customers and visitors to use the wireless internet. There's no sensitive data/files on that DSL line. It just for internet use only. The wireless is complete open and that makes me feel uncomfortable.

 

Reason why there's no WPA or WPA2 in-place? Because they feel if the WPA or WPA2 ect enabled, then the customers might have trouble to getting onto the network. They just want to avoid all the troubleshooting if that happens. So I was thinking how about a user credential log in to access our internet.

 

Here are my questions...

 

1.) What wireless router that supports authentication (Radius Server)?

2.) Do I really need and external server to have Radius enabled? Or is there a wireless router has it built-in?

3.) These guests visitors are non-domain members. Is it still possible for visitors to get into our wireless network so he/she can connect to the internet?

4.) For this Radius Server to work...Do I need to have WPA/WPA2 enabled? Or can I use it without?

If you want it simple for them then give them a WPA key once, if they have to have a log in then they will need to enter it every time and probably loose that and have more trouble.

But you say

You then have to administer more logins with usernames and passwords and troubleshoot them.

 

 

We have and use 3 captive portals here, 2 on pFsense ( free ) for Pupil BYOD and one on our wireless controller for general guests. They require more management than simply giving out a WPA key which we do for our "longTrem" guests.
