SCCM client installation error

I'm now setting up SCCM in this school and am hitting a snag.

 

I've basically followed all the instructions at windows-noob and am having an issue deploying the client. If it auto-deploys, it doesn't install as it claims it can't find the AD settings

 

Failed to get assigned site from AD. Error 0x80004005	ccmsetup	17/01/2013 15:14:39	6584 (0x19B8)

 

If I do a push install manually, stating the site code etc... I get a different message:

 

Failed to get DP locations as the expected version from MP 'SCCM.sch4290.somerset.gov.uk'. Error 0x87d00215	ccmsetup	17/01/2013 15:22:58	5556 (0x15B4)

 

Now, I don't see what I've done wrong.

 

Anyone got any ideas. For someone who is an SCCM noob, the log files are somewhat of a maze of nightmares!

In AD sites and services do you have the Subnet the client computer is living in assigned to your AD site please?

To make the logs easier: in your install media (unpackaged download, w/e), in the Tools folder, there should be a program called cmtrace.exe. Open that and tell it yes, be the default viewer. Now open the relevant logs in that program and they will be much, much easier to parse - colour coding and everything.

 

Personally I've copied it to a share so I can get to it from any computer easily, you can't read SCCM logs without it.

 

As @FN-GM says, AD Sites and Services is a good place to start - I have all my subnets listed in there, then SCCM picks up clients using AD Forest Discovery (I think) with Automaticall create IP address range boundaries... selected. Been a fair few months since I set it all up so bit rusty, tbh.

I've added the subnet, which makes sense to resolve the first error (the AD part), but it doesn't resolve the second error, for a manual install with the site code being pushed with it.

Are you boundires setup by AD sites?

Check your boundaries. I had issues with deployments etc. Then realised that i still had my test boundaries setup

 

Also, look here for the location of log files and what they mean

My tactic for working out which log is relevant to me with SCCM can best be summed up as "Date Modified"

I have a single boundary set up, of type Active Directory, linked to our single AD site. I then have a single boundary group, which references that same boundary, and that is set for group assignment with the site in SCCM.

As in, do they appear under devices? Yes, they do.

Yep, 496 is against the device as its site code.

Yep. I've also tried using the Windows Update way of doing it, and neither works.

Am starting again, as I've now found my VM has run out of space for WSUS. One day I'll learn to over-spec the VHDs for images.

I may be going into a school with a half setup SCCM in the next few months, I would obviously like to remove it and start again. Does anybody know the correct procedure for this? Far too many times I have seen people rip out the still-beating heart of some servers/roles and it cock up everything.

As far as I'm aware, you should just be able to remove the server, and remove the records in System -> System Management in Active Directory, and update the GPO if they have it setup for Windows Update.

 

The AD will have been extended to support it, but there's not a lot you can do to change that.

 

An SCCM install existed in the last school previously but the managed service provider removed it when they pulled out, and didn't do any tidy up. A new one went in just fine.

Well, a re-install, plus a Hotfix install (to fix a digital signing bug with the client) and it is all working as it should be now.
