Restricting File Sizes on Desktop for Staff

Morning,

 

We let the staff save files to their desktop but a lot of them are 'dumping' large files on there and we have atleast 20 users with files on their desktop over 5GB in size.

 

Is there a way of restricting either what type of files go onto the desktop or specify a file size limit rather than just disabling saving to desktop all together?

If you're redirecting desktops to network location on a Server 2008 or upwards machine, you could look at FSRM.

Redirect the desktops so these are stored on the server as user files rather than as part of the profile and then let normal server storage restrictions apply.

redirect them then... it's the easiest way of bringing it under control. It's either that or fix desktops so files can't be saved to them.

Where do you redirect them to keeping all current files / folders in place?

We have a share on the same partition as the home drive folders

We redirect to a hidden folder in there my documents folder, which means the files are protected previous versions and we only have to remember to backup 1 location.
