Trying to access ANY program (mainly setup exe's or MSI's) and I get this error..

"Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

8O 8O

ok...

XP SP2 - newly re-installed

my account DOES have DOMAIN ADMIN rights... (Actual Local & Domain admin works fine! - MY account works fine on another PC - same OS..)

it happens from ANY Drive .. Local (C: or D: ), Mapped Drive, UNC..

UNC's i have sussed can be added to the "Trusted Sites" list in IE(6) but Local drives cannot. (i can then run from UNC - but it treats it as if i'm downloading the file from the 'net...)

Anyone else ever encountered this bizarre error message

I've had that once and fixed it by removing the PC from the domain, changing it's SID (used newSID) and then added it back on. No idea what caused it as the computer seemed to be working perfectly OK on the domain.

No idea if that'll help you though, it's only happened once so far thankfully.

Ah this sounds possible... Will give that a bash..

PC originally had Vista on it but had to take it off cos having big probs with compatability issues.. but numpty here didn't remove it from AD cos he thought there was a RIS/WDS image for the PC!!
