W7 Alternate Network loss...wtf??

Anyone got any ideas on a problem I'm having with my home PC? Its W7 desktop, network runs to an old Netgear GS608 and from there to my Virgin Hub.

 

The problem I'm getting is that on every alternate boot I get network connectivity issues - it keeps dropping out every couple of minutes saying it can't see the internal network or the internet. Not getting it on other machines in the house - so I reckon its my box - but has anyone seen anything similar?

 

I really don't feel like stripping and rebuilding - but its starting to get on my wick!

My Win7 Pro x64 install has a similar issue where it will just drop out randomly and not connect to the network/internet until I reboot. I mainly use debian (and rarely boot into windows which makes it more frustrating when it happens) and have no problems despite it running on the same box.

 

Does it happen when you use a static IP?

Have you checked power management settings on the network interface?

Update your network card driver, to confirm if its your OS or not download a linux bootable CD and run a ping and see if it does it, replace your network cable between router/computer and between modem/router. If you have another network card chuck that in and test, may save a rebuild. Have you got another device you can plug in and see if it does it on that, if so could be your connection if you have replaced your cables.

It happened to me again earlier and I managed to run some diagnostics.

 

Resource monitor was showing that 'deferred procedure calls and interrupt service routines' was taking 80-90% of CPU Usage (which made the machine lag - not by too much but the lag was noticeable). After finding a few tutorials via google, I downloaded and installed latencymon which showed that usbport.sys was causing the problems (I did have usb devices plugged in at the time). This was as far as I got before windows update rebooted the machine to install updates .

Intersting - as I am having problems with the USB ports - its an ASUS MB and the Asmedia ports keep dropping off - which is irritating - spose it might be connected.

Are those ports USB 3.0? I have had similar issues myself on both my home and work PCs. One was fixed by updating the drivers and firmware, while the other was fixed by upgrading to Windows 8 (since it includes a generic USB 3.0 driver).

I also have an ASUS motherboard, however it's only got USB2 ports as it's around 4yrs old.
