Windows Server 2008 - Stupid Technet Mag Sentance...

Just had the laugh of my week whilst reading the article in this months Technet Mag about Windows Server 2008.

 

Just got to the part of the Server Core role and then roared with laughter as the magazine informs us on how 'cool' it is but theres more !! It has a smaller footprint - Oooh, thats good. But the phrase ' it has a reduced attack surface ' had me in fits of laughter.

The real joke is that it has taken Microsoft 10 years to get to this point.

'Attack surface' is a computer security term. It's borrowed from the military. It defines how exposed the system to unauthenticated users is in it's default state. For windows this is usually measured by what ports are open and which services are running.

Borrowed from the military ? I hope they plan on letting them have it back afterwards, we don't need another war at the moment do we ? :-)

In the military it's used to describe the relative vulnerability of a profile of a given tank/ship, or anything else likely to be shot at by (in)direct fire.
