EXCELLENT.

 

Yes i did, however, the instructions arnt that accurate. I installed it, de attached ISO, rebooted and then it goes straight into installation, completed on its own, asked for a password and ID, all the services started and now i have this screen:

 

 

If i login with 'root' and password of 'def', im not sure what to do next. I cant ping 192.168.1.101 and the command > /root/bin/ip_configurator doesnt work! Tried connecting with Putty no joy either?

It won't have ssh enabled - you enable that from the web interface - Is your VM on the correct VMware VSwitch - if you type ifconfig you should get its IP and then access that from a browser.

 

it will also allow user logins.

'find / -name ip_configurator' does nothing

 

'ipconfig' says -bash ipconfig: command not found.

 

I cant ping the default IP or the one i set. After populating the network details theres a 5min period before it goes back to the menu screen...the installation video shows it as being instant...is that normal?

ifconfig not ipconfig. Also I believe mailcleaner is a Debian based distro so the networking config will be in '/etc/networking/interfaces'. Edit that file with a text editor then reboot.

sorry just realised it was ifconfig not ipconfig haha. Heres the result:

Is that an IP within your network range? Did it get it from DHCP?

i manually set it to our server ip range so yes it is indeed. how do i change it to pick up from DHCP?

i managed to find a command to pick up from DHCP, it picked up a random address which almost worked, it said not a trusted cirtificate in the broswer, clicked continue, it changed address to https://mailcleaner/admin but then said page cannot be displayed

 

Maybe i will try a staff VLAN address instead of a server VLAN ip.

Do i need to install an editor atall? i cant type straight into the text...sorry im a complete linux noob which is why i have 100001 questions!

Your best bet (if it's installed) is 'nano' failing that use 'vi' (its not quite as straightforward to use). You'll need a static DNS entry put in your DNS server for the machine if it's not running DHCP. Otherwise if you run DHCP you'll need a static lease and also have to alter the dhcpclient config so it updates it's DNS records itself (unlike Windows, Linux wont do this unless you tell it to). Leaving it on a dynamic is probably not a good idea if you want to send mail through it.

reinstalled with different IP address, still no luck getting a responce from it.

 

We are going to see if we can use the built in junk filter in outlook to give control to the users, has anyone else used this feature before? Having problems getting the whitelist / blackloist to work through GPO

It's not very effective unless you go the full Forefront route.

We are licensed for forefront, how does that work? does it have any user interaction atall?

 

The biggest problem is genuine email gets marked as SPAM, some people want addresses blocked, others want them unblocked

Not used Sophos - Have used Mail Marshall, Smoothwall and this Mail Cleaner.

Yes, had it installed for a looong time! Does the job, users get a URL to go to when notified that they have spam waiting. Ours is set to mail them once a day if they have spam/junk. does the job, but having not used anythying else I have nothing to compare it to!

I tried installing it today but it kept stopping services and needed SQL installing so I've left it for another day. Is it easy to install? It was asking for IP addresses of incoming / outgoing mail but i'm not sure what these were

Sorry won't be much help now, it's been installed so long I can't remember how I set it up. I don't recall any difficulties, Sophos support are normally pretty good - give them a ring :-)
