A sad day indeed. I grew up watching The Sky at Night.

I'm glad I wrote to him before he died. I still have his letter and a signed photo on my desk.

That's the thing, everyone did! It was on since 1957, with Moore hosting every episode but 1! Over 700 episodes. He will single-handedly have gotten so many people into astronomy.

I will always remember him as the Games Master. I loved that show when I was younger.

His views on women and TV programmes were quite funny too.

 

"I would like to see two independent wavelengths - one controlled by women, and one for us, controlled by men. I think it may eventually happen."

 

Soaps could then safely be produced and watched by women. Sir Patrick said: "I was in hospital once and I watched a whole episode of Eastenders. I suppose it's true to life. But so is diarrhoea - and I don't want to see that on television." (Source)

I had pleasure of meeting him once and the passion he had for science and astronomy was obvious but more importantly had time for everyone who wanted to talk to him..

 

I truly great man and I am glad I was able to meet him etc..

Very sad - though I have to admit that when his picture came up on the news, my first thought was that he'd joined the Jimmy Saville, Gary Glitter, Stuart Hall (no!) brigade...

His house is the road behind mine and i have been fortunate enough to meet him a few times, all the Sky at Night film crew/presenters regularly stay at my local pub.

 

He also opened one of our new classrooms here a few years ago and gave a speech about encouraging today's learners as they are our future.

Such a great loss. I certainly remember him from Gamesmaster as well Sky at Night. And of course, if you ask anyone for the first name they think of for "Astronomer" his will more than likely be the one name everyone thinks of. Apart from my mum, bless who, who replied with "Mystic Meg"

I've no doubt. Chris Lintott has been an effective co-presenter for a few years now. I remember when he first appeared as a young nervous guest.
