We have a mailbox we use to receive emails from external, Im wanting to put an automatic reply to acknowledge receipt of the email, Ive thought about Out of Office but thats a pretty crude way to do it I feel, is there a transport rule or such I can create for this or some existing functionality?

You can set it in outlook the rule, On receive. You could do it via transport but that doesn't guarantee its made it to the mailbox, just the server has received it.

Be careful when you do that, bear in mind you may get an email loop. If it's always from the same external recipient you can ask them to make an exception, likewise you can too to help you both. If the external sender is different then use a transport rule.

Yup we did it for that too at my last place as a note to say it was received.
