It's not a 3d printed gun. The reason this made news is 'weird' laws that try and control product by controlling supply of key parts. So it becomes illegal to print up a fairly intricate/detailed but otherwise uninteresting part. No one is yet printing up fully automatic weapons - although any decent workshop with a lathe, mill and foundry will be able to knock you out something horribly lethal. They could probably knock up a receiver too.

 

3d printing is though, quite amazing. IMO it's now where personal computers were in ~1977. In the next 30 years the changes will be as revolutionary and transformative as the personal computer have been over the last 30.
