Dlink DIR615 & DD-WRT

i have an aging thompson router for my BE internet connection which is cooking and needs rebooting often, having stumbled across DD-WRT in various forum threads i thought id give it a go...

 

sourcing a supported router (Dlink DIR615) i flashed DD-WRT to the device connected it up and left it set to automatic for connecting to the ISP and nothing (the suggested settings from the ISP dont appear i cant seem to set, VPI and VCI as they suggest)

 

my question is have i misunderstood what DD-WRT does, i thought it could use it to replace my aging router, but having visited the BE support forum i was flammed for thinking this as the DD-WRT setup still needs a modem/bridged router to connect.

which to me is barking mad.
