Ive got a HTC HD2 that Ive put various flavours of Android on over the years. Here in australia where the phone was purchased originally it works fine, battery lasts about 20 hours.

Whenever I'm in the UK though, and I put in either an 02 sim or a Tesco sim, using it with the exact same settings (gps, data, etc) enabled as when i use it in Australia, the phone life plummets dramatically and im lucky to get 4 -6 hours out of it.

Is there any technological reason why this is the case?

I noticed a similar thing when I was in Germany or Holland using a native Sim.

I get around 30-40 hours battery life there, but over here I am lucky to get 18 hours. Must be something in the Cell Towers or GPS satellites...I honestly don't know why the UK sucks the life so badly out of a phone.

it always has full reception when in the UK, Im always mainly around city centers.

I thought it might be to do with the cell towers, perhaps polling more often or something?
