HP to Netgear VLANS

Hi Guys,

 

We currently have two networks within the school, one for in school and one in the boarding houses.

 

Now, we would like to get the school network onto the boarding house switches.

 

The school network switches are HP 2510G and the students are on Netgear 7 series generally.

 

With VLANs being an 802. protocol, are you able to do VLANS between these brands ?

Yes in theory you should, as long as the netgears are fully manageable and support them, although i have seen slight issues with this before.

I was thinking there might be some issues. The Netgears are stacked but I'm pretty sure the top one is managed. I'd only be looking at a few ports on the academic network.

There "Shouldn't be" in that its a standard and vlans should work across any switching manufacture/model but in my experience HP and Netgears haven't got on.

 

If they are stacked and the top one manageable you probably manage the rest from it.

We have a mix of hp and netgear and other switches (HP v1910, netgear gs724/gs748, and many others). VLANs play allright together, but different switches seem to have different methods to configure them. With the netgears we have, you can set the pvid (the vlan id added to inbound packets) separately from the port membership for outbound packets. the 1910s do the sensible thing and make them the same. Once the packets are tagged, they should be handled the same by the different switches.

 

You might have to work at getting the configuration right, but once set up, you shouldn't get any further problems. I would set up a separate test network and play with the configuration until your happy.

 

I would start by making a clear diagram of what you want to achieve.
