ful56_uk Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Hello We are currently running 2008r2 dcs. Is it safe to do an in place upgrade to 2012 or I'm I better of creating new dcs and moving roles across like ad,dns, dhcp, pki?
FN-GM Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I always (well try to) start a fresh. I dont really trust the Windows upgrades. Before you do it anyway i would demote the DC just incase it goes wrong.
ful56_uk Posted November 5, 2012 Author Posted November 5, 2012 Yeah was thinking of that just being a bit lazy
FN-GM Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 To be honest a DC wouldnt get much longer to setup. Maybe another 30 mins on top?
FN-GM Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Im still waiting for SCCM SP1 to so i can upgrade. I have upgraded VMware vcenter and all my hosts, done the Forest and domain preps just support from SCCM. Typical of MS not to support there own product.
ful56_uk Posted November 5, 2012 Author Posted November 5, 2012 I'm in the same position waiting for sp1
Norphy Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Hello We are currently running 2008r2 dcs. Is it safe to do an in place upgrade to 2012 or I'm I better of creating new dcs and moving roles across like ad,dns, dhcp, pki? We did in-place upgrades of our DCs running full Windows 2008 R2 to 2012 and rebuilt our Windows Core ones as the upgrader doesn't support in-place upgrades of DCs and DNS servers running Core. So far, we've not had any problems and the upgrade process went smoothly. I will say that our DCs are just DCs and DNS servers, nothing else. DHCP, cert services and other roles are farmed out to other servers. You will need to run forestprep and adprep before the upgrade.
FN-GM Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 You will need to run forestprep and adprep before the upgrade. In 2012 it will do it for you during the upgrade if it hasnt been done before.

Your safer to let others do it first, then upgrade 12months later once they have blogged their mistakes and MS have patched theirs.
