Shortcut to launch a 32bit program on 32bit and 64bit workstations.

Hi All,

 

We are running a selection of 64bit and 32bit Win 7 clients on our network.

Obviously a lot of software we are installing is 32bit and therefore installs to 'program files' on 32bit machines and 'program files (x86)' on 64 bit machines.

 

Is there a way of creating a shortcut to the program to put on the start menu that will launch it on both clients? At the moment I'd have to have 2 shortcuts, 1 for 32bit and 1 for 64bit.

Only way I can think of doing it really, is either using some software to deploy shortcuts based on system. So only one shortcut deployed, but it's worked out during logon etc.

 

Other option is deploying a junction point to the 32bit machines, so it redirects "program files (x86)" to "program files" then just deploy all as the "program files (x86)" shortcuts. Probably easiest way if you have lots of software etc.

You could do it in a login script I guess, but pretty sure it's a pc based variable so would be once for pc, not per user, and be admin access (Pretty sure but would need to check).

 

There a few ways to do it, either using things like "mklink" or there are some programs that you could download for free that do all the hardwork and just need to add in the links etc. Else it's a lot of registry bashing.

 

But then it's setup to work just as whenever that is used it'll go to the "right" folder, not the original If that made sense?
