Screen Res too low for Windows 8

What a shame, just installed Windows 8 on my 'ickle Acer Inspire One to see how it goes; all the Metro Apps fail to run because the screen resolution is too low. Pants.

Metro UI effects on ACER Aspire 1 netbook (max resolution 1024 X 600)

Not sure if this has been posted before but running Metro UI needs a minimum resolution of 1024 X768 which IMO seems a bit absurd in view of the large number of netbooks and tablets having a slightly lower resolution like 1024 X 600 which seems to be a common size.

 

You can "poodle fake" the screen into "down-rezzing" allowing you to use a slightly higher resolution to get round this limit.

 

Not sure where I got the info from - but thanks anyway to whoever found this out.

 

 

It doesn't look too bad on the netbook but if you don't like it then it's easy to change back again.

 

 

 

1) Run regedit

2) Search and modify all values "Display1_DownScalingSupported" from "0" to "1"

3) Restart the system

4) Enjoy with the two new resolutions 1024x768 i 1152x864

Did the same trick on a Q1 Ultra but text is a bit fuzzy as you'd expect.

 

It's a real shame 8 won't run on the native net book resolutions but the cynic in me says if it ran well on existing devices you wouldn't need to go out and spent £500+ on a new convertible tablet

Netbooks shouldn't have come with ridiculously low resolutions in the first place as some dialog boxes are too tall to fit on the screen (at 1024×576 or 1024x600).

Both Acer and Samsung must have a huge surplus of 1024x600 LCDs because some of their Android tablets have low-res screens (the Iconia A110 and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0).
