Problems with Roaming Profiles in Windows 7 / 2008 environment

Having a few problems with our Roaming Profiles.

 

We've a Win2008 server environment. Roaming Profiles work fine for all our machines on Windows XP machines.

 

However when we try to logon to Win7 machines, the profile isn't loaded. Instead we get a temporary profile loaded.

 

I have noticed that for new users the .V2 folder isn't created on the server, though they certainly have permissions to create the folder there. Some existing users (notably admin accounts) do have the .V2 folder, though this doesn't appear to make a difference to behaviour - they still don't get the roaming profile copied to the local machine.

Windows XP profiles are V1 profiles, and Windows 7 are V2. They are not compatible, so if a user has an XP profile it won't follow him when he logs on a Win 7 workstation. Synchronizing between the two is not an option right now, only with third party tools. You can however go with both profiles and point them to the same redirected folders, but I don't know how that works; never tried it.

As mentioned above, the two profiles are independant of each other - loggins onto XP will get the V1 profile while logging onto Windows 7 gets the V2 profile. You can still point the user profile in the AD to the same location i.e \\server\share\username and it will auto select a V2 profile if it exists.

 

You need to make sure that the SYSTEM account has permissions on the folder where profiles are stored so that it can create the necessary user folder. Does everybody get their own roaming profile or are you using 'master' mandatory profiles so that a group of people all get the same one?
