Smoothwall - changed a setting, now can't access box

On a page in networking iirc there are entries for the networks smoothwall knows about and what their default gateway is. I "corrected" the network as it was "wrong" (as in it said the network is 192.168.1.1 when the network is not that, it is 192.168.1.0) but now I can't get on the device. Is there any way to access the device and change this setting/take a backup, factory reset, fix the backup file and then restore it? (I know, I know, should have taken a backup before I started messing...)

I'm guessing you could ssh to it if it's enabled, if not do you have physical access to it (with keyboard, monitor etc) I believe you can change the settings easily there iirc.

If you can't connect to the web interface due to a bad gateway, ssh won't work either, since they both rely on the network settings being correct.

 

Two options:

 

a) Configure a workstation with an IP in the same subnet (i.e. 192.168.1.x, where x is a number not in use by other devices) as then it won't matter if the gateway is wrong.

 

b) Log on to the local console. Plugin a screen and keyboard and call Smoothwall support; they will walk you through it. I've done something similar before and they had it fixed in a few minutes.

 

(FWIW, you can't have a gateway of 192.168.1.0 as that isn't a usable IP address.)

Think I've explained wrong. It's not the gateway I changed, it was the network address. Obviously can't get back on the webgui to find out exactly which page it was I changed.

ifconfig for the adapter

 

ifconfig adapter and ip addres / netmask

 

eg eth0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0

Sorted. It was in "Networking » Routing » Subnets". Just did a grep and changed the entry with vi.

 

 

Can someone correct my logic here but to me the network address in our case with a mask of 255.255.240.0 is 192.168.1.0 NOT 192.168.1.1.

 

And btw smoothwall, please please please put nano on, I hate vi!!!
