Garacesh Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Recently got myself into the DOTA II beta, seriously enjoying it. I joined the edugeek Steam group not long ago, just wondered who (if anyone) plays it?
ZeroHour Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 I have it but prefer LoL tbh. I even still have beta invite lol.
DMcGuigan Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 I dabble, about 8 hours played in total, but I only really do bot fights. I'd get smooshed against players
Garacesh Posted October 10, 2012 Author Posted October 10, 2012 I have it but prefer LoL tbh. I even still have beta invite lol. Erugh, I hated LoL.. The characters I tried just seemed, not very good, and the game didn't have much to it. That and the "you-have-to-swap-characters-all-the-time(unless you buy one)" seemed to give players an advantage, in that they had quite obviously purchased a hero and always played that one class. Maybe I was just playing it wrong.. Either way, I get more enjoyment from DOTA. I dabble, about 8 hours played in total, but I only really do bot fights. I'd get smooshed against players Me too, but that's just for now. Who d'ya play as? Started off with Rikimaru, myself, but I'm mainly playing as Death Prophet.
DMcGuigan Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Me too, but that's just for now. Who d'ya play as? Started off with Rikimaru, myself, but I'm mainly playing as Death Prophet. Mostly archers, started off as Drow Ranger but now it's Clinkz. Not a massive fan of MoBAs by the looks of things, this is my first.
Garacesh Posted October 10, 2012 Author Posted October 10, 2012 Clinkz gets pretty broken if you play him right, one of my buddies plays Bounty Hunter or Clinkz, and I've seen him kick some serious ass as both. Drow Ranger's a very good starter for new players, from what I hear. Specifically have never chosen her for that reason alone. I'm a douche like that. Wind... somethingorother I think (The ginger archer) is a nice all-rounder from what I've been told, too, haven't tried yet, though. MoBA's are only good if you have some friends to play with. Voice chat and friends are a must. Voice chat because typing sucks, friends because nobody likes being yelled at for doing something wrong, or losing in general.

Yeah, I've played as all three, really didn't like Windrunner though. I didn't do TOO bad playing with a few friends, but we only played 2/3 games. Was using Drow at the time, haven't used Clinkz against people yet.
Griff Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 cannot get enough of this game, I played cs for about 8 years played maybe 3 games of dota 1 but dota 2 I have clocked up 200+ hours awesome 1
CAM Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 I have it but prefer LoL tbh. I even still have beta invite lol. They look the same to me.
DMcGuigan Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Is anybody looking to try Dota 2 or know somebody who is? I've got 8 keys in my inventory and as they're so easy to get hold of now, I can't trade them for anything! Free to good homes!
DMcGuigan Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Can I take a couple please? Sure, drop me a message either on here or on steam (Draike , I'm in the Edugeek group) and I'll get you sorted out
Garacesh Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 I've given away, I think three, but I still have, I think, five more. So same offer applies from me. Look for Garacesh in the edugeek group.
DMcGuigan Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 I recently gave about 6 away.. they gave me another 6 last night! Taking me back up to 13. So my stocks have been refilled. Shame they're not worth anything anymore
CAM Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Steam dumped five of them in my inventory yesterday. The annoying things are taking up so much space I might randomly spam my friends list with them. Grrrr!

Garacesh Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 If anybody is interested, I'm actually organising a casual/amateur tournament for DOTA II See Noobfactory EU Tournament - Home page for details. (We're working on a proper website with a decent SQL database to keep track of it all, est. a week until completion, but for now this site and a rubbish invisionfree forum will suffice)
Rawns Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 I got sent a key to this from a mate and saw this thread. No idea what DOTA2 is but I'm downloading it now.
featured_spectre Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 DOTA...best way to put it is a cross between WoW and LoL made by Valve.
Rawns Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 (edited) Well... I tried 20 minutes last night and it appears to be total rubbish. It asked what my experience with DOTA was so selected none expecting some kind of walk through. No tutorials or single play practice mode. Ended up in playing a vrs bot game with people, but that resulted in rage from my team mates as I had no idea what I was meant to be doing. Edited January 10, 2013 by Rawns

The biggest issue is learning what the enemy characters do against you and their timings. They all have a very steep learning curve and teammates are always hostile tbh. LoL is the most casual of the lot but you need someone with voice and knowledge of the characters to keep you safe really. I have been training a guy in LoL for the last few months and while he is good he just doesnt know the characters yet so he pushes are the wrong time but he is getting there. They all should have a noob bot match where it tells you the moves the enemy is about to perform that way you learn about all the characters faster before playing with others.

Maybe I'll give it another shot and watch some clips on YouTube. There's bound to be a tutorial video or two out there! PS: What do I win @ZeroHour?! 1
CAM Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Sounds like a game to play with friends or your group then publics. Started downloading it last night so might give it a crack again if we can arrange something in the Edugeek group.
DMcGuigan Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Definitely something to be played with friends, I tend to stick to Bot fights when I play to learn heroes, then play with a few people from my friends list. We get slaughtered, but teamwork is definitely essential I tend to watch Dota2Cinema's intro videos for each character on Youtube, they're about 2 minutes long and show you their skills being used. Gives you a starting point, combine that with dota2alttab.com for some basics of the items for each character.
Valentine Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 MOBA type games are really not worth playing unless you are doing it with friends as the communities are generally very very unfriendly to new players. Although compared to HoN (Heroes of Newarth) which i have played a lot more, the Dota community is quite pleasant.
