profit10 Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Hi, I realise T4 is ancient and no longer supported but a few people here still use it so would just like to see if anyone can help. If not I'll tell my staff to just use T6/sims. When someone clicks SQL link in T4 and tries to load student data and timetables they get the following error: Could not launch application: error=24 The user now has a windows 7 32bit machine and it previously worked on XP and still does for other XP users. Nothing else has changed and I've tried running it in compatability mode but still no luck. If anyone can help would be great, Thanks.
Jamo Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Did you perchance just install Windows 7? And it worked in XP with the same users? We had this error and it turned out to be the length of the username and password combination. Basically NovaT uses a really odd method to post to SQL and the string it creates can't be longer than a certain length. 80 chars I believe, which is made up of the %TEMP% path (which in Windows 7 is much longer) and the username and password in Nova-T x2. Its in a weird Capita support article somewhere, anyway the fix is to run with a really short username and password in Nova-T 1
profit10 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Yeah installed last week, and they tried to use it this morning. How short a username and password are we talking? At current it's 12 characters total. I'll give it a go nonetheless, cheers.
vikpaw Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 From KB29522 : The path of the temp directory, user name and password are too long. To find the path of the TEMP dir. Select START | RUN type command (NOT cmd) and click OK At the DOS Prompt type SET and press enter. The path of the TEMP directory will be in the list To change the temp path, Right mouse click over the My computer Icon Select Properties Select Advanced Select Environment Variables In the system variables set the temp path. e.g. c:\windows\temp And in the User variables set the temp path to e.g. c:\windows\temp (Please also check the TMP path, which is subject to the same restrictions.) (Please note you may need to re-boot the computer for this to become effective) The total of (the number of characters of the temp path doubled) and (the user name) and (password) MUST not exceed 80 characters. i.e. C:\DOCUME~1\jsmith\LOCALS~1\Temp (=32x2=64) with a SIMS user name of smith.john (=10) and a password of 12345678 (=8) therefore making 82 in total. 1
Jamo Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 From KB29522 : Thats the one!! Nova-T4 promotes the following message: Just remember that your password should be at least 2 characters and no more than 3.
vikpaw Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 I didnt actually think it supported more than 8 anyway, and it's not case sensitive. I remember most people having just their first name as username and then only a numeric password. Shocking
profit10 Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 This fix was working fine however I'm now recieving this error. If I change the temp path back, I don't recieve the error. This error is with sims.
profit10 Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 Not to worry, got it working. Just needed to give the user permissions for the folder!!
Jamo Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I would suggest not changing the %TEMP% path as it is a global change and may affect other software. It is better to get the software working on the current system, than change the system to meet an out of date legacy and no longer supported application.
